How can you protect yourself from deep nudes?

Thanks for asking.

The ex-platform formerly known as Twitter has often been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons since Elon Musk acquired it in 2022 But recent months have perhaps seen it hit a concerning new low, in terms of seediness at least. Users realized that Grok, X's inbuilt AI, could be used to generate nude images of a person, based on an original image of them wearing clothes. Lo and behold, ill-intentioned people logged in in their numbers to enter pervy prompts like put her in a bikini or take her clothes off, while their non-consenting victims could do nothing to stop themselves from being depicted in such a way. This practice is known as deep nudes, and it's becoming increasingly common. Today, we're going to share some practical advice on how to avoid falling victim to it. Even though of course, ethically, the only person in the wrong is the deep nude creator, being conscious of how to protect yourself can only be a good thing. How long has this Grok tour been around then? Well, it was July 2025 when X launched a video generator within Grok. One of its features was called Spicy Mode, and it could create sexually explicit images, undressing people from photos that were originally fully clothed. Only in late December 2025 did it really gain traction though. Between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, one of every two images generated by Grok depicted a nude person. These figures come from a study by a European NGO called AI Forensics, which was published on the 5th of January, 2026 and analyzed nearly 20,000 AI generated images. Another key point to note is that while in theory, anyone who posts photos online could be affected, the victims were overwhelmingly female. AI Forensics said that 81% of deep nude victims during that time were women. Even more alarmingly, minors were also targeted. About 2% of the images analyzed depicted people appearing to be 18 or younger. They were most often teenagers, but in some cases there were even children under 5

Isn't all of this completely illegal? Yes, absolutely. The problem is that deep nudes exist in a legal gray area in the UK, which explains why tools like Grok have still been able to generate them. Under the Online Safety Act 2023 and the Sexual Offences Act 2003, sharing or threatening to share non-consensual, intimate deep fakes is already a criminal offence, with penalties including an unlimited fine or up to 2 years in prison.

But until newer legislation fully comes into force, creating deep fake nude images without sharing them has not always been explicitly illegal, which creates enforcement gaps. Platforms may still technically allow generation, but distributing or using such images against someone in the UK can result in prosecution.

So how can I protect myself and my friends and family from deep nudes? Start with basic precautions like being careful with what you post online and limiting access to your photos so they're only shared in a secure way. Set your accounts to private, for example, so that only your approved followers can view your pictures. If you do unfortunately end up becoming a victim, it will certainly be a traumatic experience. But still do your best to keep a clear head and take the following steps as quickly as possible. First, take a dated screenshot to preserve evidence. The image, poster username, URL and date should all be visible. And you'll want to also save the original files without editing them, in case the user then deletes them. You should then report the Deep Nude on the social media platform where it's been posted, like X for example, and keep copies of all correspondence. You can also contact the Revenge Porn helpline for confidential advice and removal support. Finally, report the incident to police via 101 or through GOVUK.

There you have it.
