How AI is Reshaping the Workplace with Paul Roetzer
The Chad & Cheese Podcast
September 15, 2026
SmarterX founder and CEO Paul Roetzer joins the boys for a chat about how AI is reshaping the workforce in ways most don't suspect. Paul sold his marketing agency in 2021 as AI was already writing at near-human level—then ChatGPT showed up and things went into hyperdrive.

Dude, it turns out that Winston, Smart Recruiter's first AI hiring sidekick, is taking all the grunt work out of Recruiter's Day.
Things like candidate screening, scheduling, all the admin garbage no one actually wants to touch. Winston can do it all.
Chad Sowash (0:17)
Man, you know I'm a fan of using new tech that takes the boring, repetitive crap out of a Recruiter's Day, and allows them to have more time to connect with hiring managers and candidates.
Joel Cheesman (0:29)
Yep, Winston is doing the heavy lifting while recruiters kick back and do the actual hiring stuff. You know, like talking to people.
Chad Sowash (0:37)
I really dig that Smart Recruiters is evolving out of the legacy ATS model and embracing cleaner processes using AI. With most ATS providers, it's like, hey, 2003 called and it wants its 30-minute application process back.
Joel Cheesman (0:53)
No doubt. It sounds like Rebecca and the team are using Winston to push Smart Recruiters into the future. While the ATS vendors are basically on an AOL dial-up modem with a dashboard.
Chad Sowash (1:05)
With Smart Recruiters, Winston does the grind and the recruiters get the glory.

It's time for The Chad & Cheese Podcast.
Joel Cheesman (1:56)
It's the podcast your starting quarterback warned you about. It's The Chad & Cheese Podcast everybody. I'm your cohost, Joel Cheesman. Joined as always, Chad Sowash is riding shotgun as we welcome Paul Roetzer to the show. Paul is the founder and CEO of SmarterX, an AI research and consulting firm. He's also the cohost of the Artificial Intelligence Show podcast. He's also a proud Clevelander. Paul, welcome to HR's Most Dangerous Podcast.
Paul Roetzer (2:27)
It is great to be with you guys. Looking forward to the conversation. It is a space I think a lot about, but I don't have a lot of answers. I have more questions than answers with what's going on with AI in the workforce.
Joel Cheesman (2:39)
You're like a Browns coach. You're like the coach of the Browns. A lot more questions than answers. That's okay, my friend. Before we get into all the AI of it, our listeners, our fans want to know more about you, the person.
What is it that makes Paul tick?
Paul Roetzer (2:55)
Yeah, family, probably more than anything.
I'm a Clevelander, born and raised, started my first company here, building my second company here. I share your pain with being a Browns fan and all that comes along with that.
Joel Cheesman (3:10)
Does my hat bring you comfort or shell shock?
SPEAKER_5 (3:15)
We got on the camera and I saw it.
Paul Roetzer (3:16)
It just hit that visceral reaction. It's like, oh, season is coming.
Chad Sowash (3:20)
Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_3 (3:22)
Winter is coming. Winter is coming. Yes, winter is coming for sure.
Paul Roetzer (3:26)
So yeah, a lot of what shapes me is my family, my kids, even from an AI perspective, I look through the lens of what they're going through in eighth grade. My daughter is just starting high school and what the world is going to look like for them, what the job market is going to look like for them. I spent a lot of time thinking about that and working on that. But I also come from a journalism background, so I'm not an AI engineer, I'm not creating the models, I'm more the storyteller behind them. Then I think about the impact they have on people like me, like what's the impact on writers?
My wife is a painting major, an art history major. What's the impact on the creative industry and the people who make a living creating amazing things? I think I approach AI with tremendous empathy for the impact it has on people and on the workforce.
I think personally, I just try and build a business and make as much time as possible to spend time with my family while they still want to be around me. I was still cool enough for them to want to hang out with. Yeah, that's what drives me right now.
