One of the key times of a man or woman's life is when they become an adult, and your parents have raised you to do that.
Luke Landiak (1:02)
I had a pretty staunch curfew.
John Michael Lucido (1:04)
The same.
Luke Landiak (1:05)
Yeah. And if I was not home by 11, there was a conversation.
John Michael Lucido (1:10)
That word honor is the critical detail in that statement. As a kid, honor equals obedience. Then it starts to change.
All right, I gotta say, this is an episode I've been excited about for a long time. There was, I can't remember exactly when, maybe like September-ish, we had a conversation. I can't remember, what was the pod about that we started going on?
Luke Landiak (1:35)
It wasn't about our parents, but it might have been about tension.
John Michael Lucido (1:39)
That's exactly right.
Luke Landiak (1:40)
Yeah, it might have been about tension in the household.
John Michael Lucido (1:43)
That's exactly what it was. And we got started on a bit. I kind of went off on a little tangent about this phrase. And as we were sitting there after the episode, we were like, we've got to do an episode on that.
One of the key times of a man or woman's life is when they become an adult.
And your parents have raised you to do that. They've raised you to leave the nest and to grow your own little wings. There's a book, there's a kid's book about that. I can't remember what it's called.
Luke Landiak (2:16)
There's All In Places You'll Go.
John Michael Lucido (2:17)
All In Places You'll Go. I was gonna say One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but that is not about that at all.
Luke Landiak (2:23)
No.
John Michael Lucido (2:25)
But anyways, it's a time of a person's life that is really beautiful, but it creates a completely different dynamic and a different relationship with your parents than you're used to.
Luke Landiak (2:36)
Yes.
John Michael Lucido (2:37)
Let's start with in the home parenting.
Luke Landiak (2:41)
When you were growing up.
John Michael Lucido (2:42)
High school, middle school. What were some kind of favorite memories that you had with your parents? What were some things that when you look back at those times of your life that you will try to do with your own kids?
Luke Landiak (2:55)
This is a great place to start, because what a gift to look back with gratitude, unlike my childhood. And I think traditions come to mind immediately.
Our family was rooted in, we had a couple of pillars of this is what we do every year. Christmas Eve, all-white dinner.
John Michael Lucido (3:16)
That's so fun.
Luke Landiak (3:17)
All-white dinner. I think it's a Lithuanian tradition.
John Michael Lucido (3:19)
Cool. So you wear white.
Luke Landiak (3:21)
No, no, we eat white. So all of the food, all of the napkins, everything is white.
John Michael Lucido (3:28)
Interesting.
Luke Landiak (3:29)
From mashed potatoes to creamed herring, which I never ate.
John Michael Lucido (3:33)
Creamed herring?
Luke Landiak (3:34)
Yes. Like fish? Yes.
John Michael Lucido (3:37)
I'm not gonna lie, that sounds gross.
Luke Landiak (3:40)
It is disgusting. It's like a rite of passage.
John Michael Lucido (3:42)
Mrs. Landiac, I'm sorry.
Luke Landiak (3:43)
No, she doesn't mean it either. Mr. Landiac. Mr. Landiac, okay.
But it's part of the tradition. And it's like, that is in my head, in my heart, as I look back and like, that was amazing. The whole family, Christmas Eve, it's my sister's birthday on Christmas Eve, and to gather and have an all-white meal. Also around Christmas, we would go see a Christmas carol, you know? In theaters?
John Michael Lucido (4:07)
Or put it at the house?
Luke Landiak (4:08)
No, at the Goodman Theater in downtown Chicago. Cool. Live production.
