What sanctions relief for Russia means for oil markets and why the French protests are also a bond market story.
From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. Over the weekend, President Trump signed an executive order blocking the sanctions against Russia, included in a law he signed just last month. I'm joined by Julia Coronado, founder and president of Macro Policy Perspectives. And Julia, what impact, if any, will this move have on oil supplies?
SPEAKER_6 (1:29)
We may be seeing some near-term wiggles, but this really does not fundamentally change the backdrop of oil supply globally. And we should not expect much relief at the pump, either in gasoline or diesel.
Kimberly Adams (1:43)
I want to turn your attention to these protests and riots happening in France, which, you know, on the surface might seem like a domestic issue, but it also relates to some of the broader trends we've been seeing in the global bond market. Can you walk us through that?
SPEAKER_6 (2:01)
So, France has seen their borrowing costs rise tremendously over the last several weeks. Investors getting very nervous about their deficit. The protests are, in fact, about the lack of funding for schools, which is coming in part because of the fiscal strains. So, it is, there is a relationship there, and it illustrates that, again, those global bond markets are getting quite nervous about high and persistent deficits in countries like France, but also the US.

Julia Coronado at Macro Policy Perspectives. And big tech firms will begin reporting third quarter financial results this week. As Marketplace's Henry Epp explains, the reports follow a week in which investors got a bit nervous about parts of the AI business.
Henry Epp (2:50)
The latest concern that some investors have about the build out of AI systems is debt. Last week, it was the debt of one company, CoreWeave, that sent many tech stocks sliding. CoreWeave operates data centers which power AI and has taken on tens of billions of dollars of debt. Yields on its bonds spiked last week as investors grew concerned about the company's ability to bring in enough revenue to keep up with the debt it's taking on. But other tech investors argued demand for data center services will stay strong.
That could boost companies like CoreWeave in the long run. Financial results from tech giants starting with meta this week will shed more light on the strength of that demand for data centers and the chips inside them. I'm Henry App for Marketplace.
