It's September 28th. All right, big news coming down from the New York Rangers. 18-year-old Alberts Smits has officially earned a spot on the opening night roster as the team gets ready to kick off the 2026 to 2027 NHL season. He was picked number 5 overall in the draft just a few months ago, and now he's about to make his NHL debut. Smits is stepping into a tight defensive lineup, especially after the Rangers made some solid moves this summer. While it looked like he might start the season in Hartford, he proved everyone wrong in training camp and preseason. That's a big one. Coach Mike Sullivan's been pretty impressed with Smits' game.
He pointed out that the kid's got a strong reach, defends well, and plays like he belongs out there. Sounds like he's got the right mindset to handle the pressure, for sure. This move is historic too. He's the first 18-year-old defender for the Rangers since Dave Maloney back in 1974
Smits is entering the record books, and it's exciting to see how he fits into the lineup alongside Braden Schneider.
Overall, Smits making the team is a huge development. It's a great time for Rangers fans as they look forward to what this new season has in store. That wraps New York Rangers News Today, brought to you with AI.
