You said that HRV is the language of the body. How did that help us understand what's actually happening inside?
**Salim Najjar** (0:03)
If it is measuring that gap or variance between each beat, let's say your heart rate is 72, HRV is the measure of each of that variance between the 72 and a minute. The higher variance between each of the beats, it indicates a more malleable and resilient nervous system that could handle the ever-changing environment that we are always seeing. And just like there's no two fingerprints in the world that are the same, there's actually no two heartbeats in the world that are the same. Meaning your HRV score is solely meant just for you.

I put a lot of consideration into what I eat. We have to eat real whole foods to stay healthy, and that is why I love my clean seafood box from Seatopia. It arrives blast frozen at my house, it's lab tested for microplastics and mercury, and it's packed with a variety of seafood that's full of bioavailable Omega-3s. You get the best of seafood's nutritional properties without the side of toxins sadly now often found in our oceans. My favorite is the Seatopia King Salmon, which is full of bioavailable EPA and DHA, and you get so much of it in a single meal, that actually beats what most people get in a week's worth of supplements. Honestly, it does taste so much better than a pill. Get your first box at Seatopia.Fish and use the code HYMAN for free shipping.
Before we begin, I'd like to note that today's conversation explores one perspective of an area of medicine that continues to be actively debated. And while we discuss emerging evidence and critiques of current psychiatric practice, treatment decisions, especially involving antidepressants or other prescription medications, should always be made in consultation with your health care provider. The views expressed by my guest are her own and reflect her interpretation of the available evidence. My goal in hosting conversations like this is to explore different perspectives, to examine the science, to encourage thoughtful discussion, not to provide individualized medical advice. So if you're currently taking medication, please don't stop or change your treatment based on this conversation alone. Instead, use this episode as a starting point for an informed conversation with your health care team. My hope is that these discussions encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and shared decision making between patients and their clinicians.
So before we wrap up, if you found today's conversation on Lyme disease helpful, be sure to check out my upcoming conversation with one of the world's leading Lyme experts, Dr. Richard Horowitz. We go beyond Lyme disease itself to explore why so many people remain chronically ill. We explore his groundbreaking EmSense framework for understanding chronic disease, and we also look at the biggest drivers of chronic inflammation and what it really takes to help the body heal. So be sure to check it out this Wednesday. Here's a preview.
If you enjoyed today's episode, don't miss my upcoming conversation with Lyme disease expert, Dr. Richard Horowitz. We dive into why so many people stay sick, and we look at the hidden drivers of chronic illness, and a whole new way of thinking about inflammation and recovery and healing. It drops this Wednesday, and until then, here's a preview of what's to come. I know another doctor talking about protein, but stay with me for a second because what matters isn't just how much protein you eat, it's actually whether your body can actually use it. As we age, we naturally lose muscle and become less efficient in absorbing and utilizing protein. There's actually a term for this, anabolic resistance. That's why I add Perfect Amino to my smoothie every morning. It gives you all nine essential amino acids in a highly adorable form. This supports muscle protein synthesis and helps maintain muscle and bone health as you get older. Unlike many whey proteins that can spike insulin levels similar to sugar, Perfect Amino doesn't. Plus, it can help you hit your protein goals without adding a lot of unnecessary calories. Thank you so much for having me, Mark. Truly a pleasure.

So good to be with you. You've been coaching me on my HRV, which I appreciate because I got work to do.
For those of you listening who don't know what HRV is, it means heart rate variability. We're going to get into what that means, why it's important, how it's a reflection of your nervous system state and why you need to pay attention to it, how you can actually improve your overall well-being and health and longevity and all the things we care about. So Salim, for someone who's first hearing about HRV, what is it and what is it actually measuring?
