Has Climate Breakdown Really Begun? Thanks for asking.
On September the 6th, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres released a 96 word statement in which he referred to Climate Breakdown having begun.
It was in response to a report from the World Meteorological Organization which highlighted the impact of record-breaking heatwaves across the globe this summer. June, July and August 2023 became the hottest three-month period ever recorded. The WMO says that the increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves we're experiencing are causing air quality to decline, impacting human health. What's the definition of climate breakdown then? Let's be clear, it's not a scientific term by any stretch of the imagination. Furthermore, ever since he became UN Secretary General in 2017, Guterres has been known for using strong, attention-grabbing language on climate issues.

At last year's COP27 summit, he declared, We are on a highway to climate hell, with our foot still on the accelerator.

And earlier this summer, he stated the following at a UN press conference after three weeks of heat waves.

It might seem a little alarmist, but when you consider the record-breaking temperatures seen this summer, the choice of words doesn't seem so outrageous. Was this summer expected to be so hot? Climatologists will tell you that the extreme weather seen recently isn't actually a surprise. Unfortunately, it more or less lines up with scientific predictions. Climate tipping points are thresholds that trigger significant and potentially irreversible changes when crossed. One example is the complete disappearance of coral reef, which environmental scientists have warned could happen by 2050 That's primarily due to rising ocean temperatures, overfishing and unsustainable coastal development. The direct consequences would include the loss of an ecosystem and the biodiversity it hosts, as well as a deterioration of the marine food chain. Is there any way back? Experts have been very clear that current climate action needs to be accelerated if we're to have any hope of achieving climate goals like those set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement. On the 8th of September, the UN released its Global Stocktake Report, which found that current national pledges from countries across the world would be nowhere near enough to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius. The report said that over 20 gigatons of additional CO2 reductions would be required by 2030 And by 2050, the world needs to hit global net zero and use low and zero carbon sources for 99% of the world's electricity.
