Grandma and the Pirates

Okay, our friends.

So today, we are taking a break.

We've been reading stories from all over the world, and I think we can stop with that right now, because there are some things that are known throughout the world, no matter who you are or where you live. And that is that you probably have a family. You might even have a grandma.
And your grandma might know pirates.

Well, maybe not every grandma, but this grandma does.

Today's story is called...

**Philip** (0:33)
Maybe being attacked by pirates?

**Philip** (0:35)
Oh, I hope not.

**Philip** (0:37)
Maybe she baked a pie and the pirates wanted a pie.

I think somebody's been looking at the pictures. Let's read it, shall we? Today's story is called Grandma and the Pirates.

Philip!

**Lisa Bueno** (0:54)
It was because of her wonderful noodle pudding that Grandma met the pirates.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:01)
What do you think a noodle pudding is?

**Lisa Bueno** (1:04)
On a warm summer day when Melissa was over in the meadow picking buttercups and daisies, Oliver said to Grandma, Ollie want a noodle.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:16)
Hmm.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:17)
In the picture, we can see Melissa.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:19)
We can assume who she is, right? She's this little girl.

**Philip** (1:23)
Who do you think Oliver is?

**Lisa Bueno** (1:27)
Let's see.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:28)
So Grandma cooked a noodle pudding and set it on the window sill to cool. A deliciously noodley aroma wafted out on the warm sea breezes.
Yum, said Oliver.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:43)
And Oliver, it looks like is a parrot?

**Philip** (1:49)
Yum.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:51)
Said three hungry, savage pirates who happened to be sailing past.

**Lisa Bueno** (1:58)
None of them could cook very well.

**Lisa Bueno** (2:00)
For breakfast, lunch and supper, they ate raw fish and barnacles.

**Philip** (2:06)
Yuck.

**Lisa Bueno** (2:07)
At snack time, they sucked on seaweed. And when that delicious noodle-y aroma reached their three savage noses, they stopped the ship, dropped the anchor, and rowed ashore.

**Philip** (2:22)
Yo ho, yum yum, we smell noodles.

**Philip** (2:27)
We want some.

**Philip** (2:30)
Yo ho, yum yum, look out noodles. Here we come.

**Philip** (2:37)
Exactly how I suspected.

**Philip** (2:39)
There's literally a pie.

**Lisa Bueno** (2:42)
They swaggered up to Grandma's house and grabbed the noodle pudding. Unhand those noodles, cried Grandma, but they swallowed them down.

**Philip** (2:53)
Gulp, gulp, gulp.

**Lisa Bueno** (2:57)
Much better than seaweed, they said.

**Philip** (3:02)
What else is there to eat?

**Lisa Bueno** (3:04)
They opened up Grandma's cupboard, and into their pirate sacks went strawberry shortcake, mashed potatoes too, pickled beets, pot roast, delicious meatball stew, lamb chops, lollipops, peanut butter spread, pizza pie, popcorn, pumpernickel bread, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, blueberry juice, apricot dumplings, and rich chocolate mousse, cold chicken salad, spicy apple strudel, oatmeal muffins, and every last noodle.
That's shocking, isn't it? Then, as if it weren't savage enough, they popped grandma and Oliver into a pirate sack too.

**Philip** (3:50)
Cool.
Help! Help! Help! We're being kidnapped by pirates!

**Lisa Bueno** (3:59)
Yelled grandma and Oliver. And when Melissa heard their cries, she dropped her buttercups and daisies and ran back to the house as fast as she could.
So I'm going to guess Melissa is the granddaughter.

**Philip** (4:10)
Yeah.

**Lisa Bueno** (4:12)
It wasn't fast enough. They were gone. Melissa looked out at the ship still anchored in the bay. She could hear the roar and clamor the pirates were making as they fought over who had the most food. Do you know what a clamor is?
A noise.

**Philip** (4:30)
Yeah, a loud sound.

**Lisa Bueno** (4:35)
They'll be eating all day, she said to herself.

**Lisa Bueno** (4:38)
I'll wait until dark.

**Philip** (4:40)
It'll be safer to rescue grandma and Oliver then.

**Lisa Bueno** (4:44)
By the light of the moon, she swam out to the ship and climbed aboard.
The pirates were fast asleep. How happy Melissa, grandma and Oliver were to see each other again.

**Philip** (5:00)
Lower the sleeping boat.

**Lisa Bueno** (5:01)
We'll sneak away while the pirates are sleeping, whispered Melissa. It's not going to be that easy, grandma sighed.

**Philip** (5:10)
The boss pirate chained Oliver to the parrot perch, and he keeps the key in his boot.

**Lisa Bueno** (5:19)
Melissa tiptoed over and reached into the boot.

**Philip** (5:23)
Oh, how, how?

**Lisa Bueno** (5:25)
The boss pirate laughed. He was very ticklish. He laughed so hard that he woke himself up. And then he woke up the other pirates too, and then he stopped laughing and growled.
