God is Homeschooling the Mama, Too | Real Talk for Hard Homeschool Days

The Gritty Gospel with Christy Young

October 8, 2026

Homeschool mama, you are never going to get it all done. The laundry will multiply, the lesson plans will fall apart, and somebody will cry—possibly you. The first month is hard, and the enemy would love to convince you that hard means you’re failing. It doesn’t. God is homeschooling the mama, too.

You guys, if you're feeling overwhelmed, if you're a homeschool mom, mama trying to get back into the rhythms of school, and you're feeling overwhelmed, you're in good company, that's what we want you to know. And this video is for you. We hope you get to sit back and listen and be encouraged. In fact, we pray that we can put steel in your spine to encourage you to keep going, to do the next faithful thing. That is the goal of this podcast episode.

Heather (0:23)

And they're not alone, and mama, you're not alone because we're filling it.

Christy Young (0:26)

No.

Y'all, we're back with The Gritty Gospel. We love y'all so much. And today, we just really are feeling a lot of things in life. So we thought it'd be fun to have like a mom table talk. I love it that you called it that. Where we're kind of keeping it real, but all in the spirit of, to me, it's Galatians 6-2.

God's called us to bear one another's burdens in Christ. And then, and in so doing, we actually fulfill the law of Christ when we bear one another's burdens. And I feel like one of the ways that we, Heather and I, like one of our main goals for the podcast, is just to encourage women who are in the trenches, in homeschooling, in motherhood, in discipleship. You're aiming to do all these beautiful things. And you guys, that is hard. And so we just want to be in it with you and encourage you in it.

Heather (1:12)

Yes, yes. We've been feeling before we started doing this, a lot of just, I'll speak for me, it's like an overwhelm-whelminess. I think it comes every July and August, like towards the end of July, you start thinking about school. And I've just been kind of avoiding it, which is not necessarily good. But every time that I would think about it, sit down, plan it, it was just almost like this yucky anxiousness, like, oh, I don't want to do that. Or just so anxious. I was like, nope, just avoid, avoid, avoid.

That's kind of like what I've been feeling. And then I finally, today, actually, and even a couple of days during the week, I was like, okay, I really got to get real. Now we've been doing a little bit, but I just didn't feel like I had like a good wraparound. Still, it's a loose plan. It's a growing document for school. Yeah. Yeah, share a little bit about what you've been.

Christy Young (2:04)

Yeah, in every way, you guys. So I always make good plans. I'm a planner. I like to plan. And then, of course, I have now we are foster baby. In the middle of all of school getting started over the last month, you guys, we've had a lot of major changes in our lives.

And so one of them being that our foster daughter has gone home to Biomom and in a multitude of ways that has had a ripple effect in our family. But basically, we've it's been a rough start to a brand new school year. However, we trust the Lord. We love the Lord. He is amazing and my rock in the midst of the storm that and the rock for our family.

So we made good plans and then and I'm teaching we have basically a sixth grade levels happening in my in my house right now. But to simplify that, it really is a high school. I have one kid in middle school and then three littles in elementary. And so I kind of break it up in like that. I have three little schools kind of like needing to happen the school.

Heather (3:02)

Yeah, I got all the schools.

Christy Young (3:03)

Yeah, and so that alone can feel overwhelming at the same time. You guys, I'm like one of these people who I'm like, OK, Lord, with you, I can do anything. So I'm going to pull up my sleeves. I'm going to make good plans and then I'm going to aim to execute it. Although I've been doing this long enough that I know that I'm going to make good plans and hold them with an open hand, knowing that God is going to have his way with my life, with my family, and I want it to be like that. So I know now, I will make good plans and then y'all, they will faithfully get blown up in every kind of way. And then some of them will work. Some of them won't. We will have to rewrite things. And so I think Heather and I would love to basically hit on three points of encouragement, really. We want to keep it real with how hard it is and tell and help you guys to find encouragement in Christ the way we do.
