Now, as we said earlier, we try to have a lot of fun on this show, but we know sometimes our content can be a little mature.
So that's why every once in a while, we have to take a step back and do something for the younger listeners of The Hammer and Nigel Show. We call it Fun Facts for Kids.
SPEAKER_2 (0:21)
It's time for Hammer and Nigel's Fun Facts for Kids.
Hammer (0:26)
These are real pieces of information that the younger listeners can share with their friends, maybe on the bus stop, maybe at lunch or school.
Nigel (0:35)
Turn it up, kids. Sure.
Hammer (0:38)
Preventable medical mistakes rank as the third leading cause of death, resulting in over 250,000 fatalities every year. So remember, kids, next time you go see your family pediatrician, you may die.

Doctors say your eyes possess a separate immune system.
So if your body's main immune system ever discovers this, it can attack your eyes and cause permanent blindness. And there's nothing you can do to stop or reverse it.

Fun Facts for Kids.
Nigel (1:18)
I don't believe a word of that.
Hammer (1:20)
I'm sorry, Dr. Laskowski, did I miss your degree that you got from Johns Hopkins? Did I not see that over there? I'll trust the doctors. Thank you very much.
According to researchers, the more people who witness an emergency of some kind, the less likely any single person is to help. It's a phenomenon called diffusion of responsibility. Individuals subconsciously assume somebody else will step in, occasionally leading to crowds watching tragedies unfold without a single person dialing for help.

I mean, sometimes when I see somebody on the side of the road and they're like trying to wave me down, I'll drive past them and say, yeah, somebody else will get it.
Hammer (2:12)
I think that's different than somebody who is on fire trying to wave you down. Or somebody that's missing a leg and like, you know, very badly injured.
Nigel (2:22)
That's a good point.
Hammer (2:23)
It's a little different.
If a cockroach loses its head, it doesn't die immediately because cockroaches breathe through tiny little holes in their body rather than their mouths. They can survive up to a week without a head. They only die because without a mouth, they can't drink water. And ultimately, they die of extreme dehydration.

Fun Facts for Kids.
Nigel (2:50)
That is that's kind of a fun fact for a kid, right? Yeah.
Hammer (2:56)
The tarantula hawk wasp is a massive wasp that hunts down tarantulas in Africa.
Nigel (3:03)
That sounds terrifying.
Hammer (3:05)
If it stings a human while the excruciating pain only lasts about five minutes, it completely shuts down a man's ability to function. The official medical advice about being stung by one of these is to lie down and scream, so you don't trip and injure yourself.
Nigel (3:24)
I can do that.
Hammer (3:25)
A doctor described the sensation as blinding, fierce, shockingly electric. It's like running a hair dryer and then dropping it in your little bubble bath.

Fun facts for kids.
Nigel (3:39)
What's it called again?
Hammer (3:41)
The tarantula hawk wasp. I'm scared of all that.
Nigel (3:47)
Oh, I'm going to have nightmares.
Hammer (3:50)
Hey, kids, notorious killer Jeffrey Dahmer suffered from extreme abandonment issues. Instead of emotional attachments, he formed attachments exclusively to dead bodies and corpses.
He confessed to spending seven years visiting random funerals and car crash viewings and later arranged the skull of his favorite victims in his living room to create friends who could never leave him.

Fun Facts for Kids.
Nigel (4:20)
How in any way, shape or form is that a fun fact, much less a fun fact for a kid?
Hammer (4:28)
You're statistically far more likely to be crushed to death by a vending machine than eaten by a shark.
On average, vending machines crush, crush and kill multiple people every year when victims aggressively tilt or shake the heavy units to try to get a free snack. So remember, kids, next time you're trying to go get Cheetos, it may be your last day on Earth.

Fun Facts for Kids.
Hammer (4:56)
There you go.
Nigel (4:57)
Let that be a lesson to you.
Hammer (4:58)
Right. Don't be afraid of the ocean. Go out there well past the buoy, but stay away from the vending machine. It's The Hammer and Nigel Show.
