Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Apple Insider Podcast. I'm your host, Wesley Hilliard, and I'm joined once again by William Gallagher. We're gonna get into all of the Smart Home stuff in a moment, but first, I'd like to thank our sponsors, CleanMyMac by MacPaw and Masterclass. If you don't wanna hear anything about sponsors, you can pay for the Apple Insider Plus subscription. You'll get an ad-free show, you'll get bonus content at the end of the episode, and today's topic is getting a little bit more in detail, more opinionated about Apple's Welcome Home announcements.
What they did right, what they could do better. You'll probably hear some of that in the main show, but we're gonna get really into it in the post show. William, how are you today?
William Gallagher (0:48)
I'm fine, but you just tickled me there. This has been one of those launches where there's a certain amount of fact, but there's been so much more opinion since, and I might be a bit guilty of that as well. I'm looking forward to Apple Insider Plus. I would now say, how are you? But are you in that perilous state of your bank account's going down, your accountant's complaining, the IRS after you, for all the devices you're gonna be buying this month?
Wesley Hilliard (1:13)
Well, luckily it seems that everything comes out in November. So I have a month to refinance my home, take out a couple of additional loans.
William Gallagher (1:27)
When you say financing, it scares me, scares me, but okay.
Wesley Hilliard (1:31)
Yeah, it's an expensive set of announcements, if only because everything they announced is going to be something I'm going to buy. But luckily they're all inexpensive items. If this was a $50,000 Mac Pro, we'd be having a different discussion.
William Gallagher (1:48)
Yeah, because you'd be using a Mac, you'd be buying a Mac, I'd be so pleased. But yeah, sorry, I see your point. They're not that inexpensive.
Oh, especially if Apple tricks you into buying four HomePod minis to do all of this stuff.
Wesley Hilliard (2:03)
So before we get into it too much, I want to cover a couple of very tiny topics that are coming in ahead of us here. So there's a second October event. I think we discussed this last week, Touchscreen MacBook Pro and OLED iPad mini for October 27th.
So that's going to be interesting.
William Gallagher (2:26)
I just thought that means, if you're watching the new, the video version of the episode of Podcast, that means at some point you might see me go like that to push buttons. That's, that's AppleInsider in 3D. That'd be, I'll be quiet now. Okay.
So sorry, you were saying the touch screen. Yeah.
Wesley Hilliard (2:46)
Touch screen MacBooks, I'm still not sure about. I agree with the whole zombie arm thing, but we're also talking about a generation of people who are raised on touch screens and find it odd that their MacBook does not have a touch screen. So I can see both points. I don't care. I don't use a Mac. So it doesn't affect me either way.
William, I have some doom and gloom for you. It's the end of Apple. They'll never sell another iPhone because clearly, they're not selling enough. They've cut production orders.
The stock market slid on the news. Apple is doomed to fail. They were on their way to $5 trillion, William. They were going to pass Nvidia. Then we found out the sneaky, sad truth that nobody likes iPhone anymore.
William Gallagher (3:39)
Except, hang on, what time is it? It's exactly the time it was last year, when precisely the same news broke.
I looked into this and I don't remember happening the year before, but the previous two or three years, on this date, at this hour, there's been news of production cuts, and Apple seems to have muddled through.
Wesley Hilliard (4:00)
So, good news, William. I've just checked the stock market. Apple has surpassed $5 trillion as we record. So, I think they're going to be okay. I think, you know what, we'll take a moment to relax, because, yeah, this is all nonsense.
William Gallagher (4:16)
I was so worried there for a minute.
Wesley Hilliard (4:19)
This is the last episode of the Apple Insider Podcast.
William Gallagher (4:22)
No, I was thinking for Apple. I wasn't thinking of us. My heart went out to Apple for this, and you just sort of made yourself. The poor little guys.
Wesley Hilliard (4:30)
Well, what's really funny is, they're never production cuts in the way that we understand them.
We've reached out, we've talked to suppliers. We know what this means, but for some reason, reports use the most damning descriptions they can in the headlines to, I think for this reason, because the stock market plummets by several dollars, and then rises right back up an hour later. So you can make some good money if you're in this business. I'm not alleging anything.
