You really don't have to hit them over the head with a pumpkin.

Hey, everybody. It's Kelly Wilkness and I'm here with Anita Joyce, and this is Decorating Tips and Tricks. Today, we're discussing fall decor, a new perspective. So we're going to give you some more atmospheric ideas today and some specific items. So you're going to want to listen in to get all those because there's some really great ones. I'm thinking that fall decorating for 2026 is less about adding actual seasonal objects. Hence, the pumpkin, even though I adore the pumpkin, and more about changing the atmosphere of a room or your home.

Oh, I like that.

Kelly Wilkness (2:00)

Maybe this was forced upon me because these squirrels have discovered that they also like a pumpkin spiced latte, a pumpkin bread, and actual pumpkins. And they have eaten all my pumpkins from the inside out.

Certainly, they did not charge the door and get inside. But outside, it's the third year in a row. First year, there were some nibbles. Last year, they were smart. They did the back of the pumpkins or they did one side. You could twist it. This year, decimated. Like where it's just like pictured, the stem just slides down because there's no pumpkin left.

Anita Joyce (2:44)

It's like a little squirrel house. And I had a situation in a house we had several years ago, but lots of trees around the house. We had definitely a squirrel problem. And I had these pretty new pillows I put out on the porch. My pillows were all over the front yard. The stuffing was everywhere.

Kelly Wilkness (3:02)

Wow. Maybe those pillows had pumpkins on them and they were lured over there by them.

Anita Joyce (3:06)

I guess.

Kelly Wilkness (3:07)

You don't want pillows with pumpkins on them because that is kind of smashing somebody over the head with fall. I'm approaching the fall this year with a very light touch and very subtle changes in my house that are giving the fall feel without being so obvious.

Anita Joyce (3:30)

We both are not big into the seasonal decor. So I think we both prefer a natural approach and more of a light approach and not something where you got to bring the tubs in, everything else comes down and you put up everything new. That's not really our way.

So I'm with you there. I think it is about more of a feeling and more about a nod, as they say to the season.

Kelly Wilkness (3:54)

A nice nod. Yes. Maybe just a little incline of the head this year. I think I'm doing even less nod.

Anita Joyce (4:01)

You're tipping your hat. Yes, exactly.

Kelly Wilkness (4:03)

If I was wearing a hat, I would tip it. I did do the bins, especially when we were blogging and when my kids were little.

You even did a little bit more of Halloween.

Anita Joyce (4:16)

I do remember some incident where there were the baby boos filled the back of your car. Might have there been something where you were accidentally exposed to Trader Joe's, that something around baby boos.

Kelly Wilkness (4:28)

Well, yes, that was the time that I was picking out the perfect baby boos, and I was in the grocery store, and the automatic doors opened, and I was bent over, and my skirt went flying up. Yeah, that was a long time ago. I think Yvonne was still with us when that happened. But yes, that sort of thing, you remember. So I don't pick out the pumpkins in the center foyer of the grocery store anymore. I certainly try not to wear a flowy skirt when I'm picking out pumpkins. So that's just an extra tip for today. So if anybody was worried about that, now you know what to wear. Definitely wear pants. The new fall palette for this year is a little bit different than the traditional brown, rust, orange, and maybe throw in a little white pumpkin.
