Exhausted from Discipling Your Strong-Willed Child?
The Gritty Gospel with Christy Young
October 8, 2026
You love your child. You love Jesus. You believe God has called you to homeschool and disciple your children. **But some days? You're just flat-out exhausted.** The lying. The disobedience. The attitude. The same conversations. The same correction.

Alrighty, hey, you guys. We're trying a new setup here.
Heather (0:03)
I know.
Christy Young (0:03)
Some new, like, comfy chairs and a time, I don't know, we're just trying something new.
Heather (0:07)
A little table, I like it.
Christy Young (0:08)
We're trying something new. So forgive us if we're rearranging as we do all the things.
Heather (0:12)
I like it.
Christy Young (0:13)
But you guys, today, we're gonna aim to talk about what, you know, for, this is for you, if you have a selfish, defiant, unthankful.
Heather (0:22)
Unrepentant.
Christy Young (0:23)
Yes, sometimes, maybe they're-
Heather (0:25)
Headstrong.
Christy Young (0:26)
Oh, yes. If you have a child with any of those qualities, you guys, then this video is for you, because we have children that meet those, that standard and y'all in the moment, parenting them, discipling them, training them is and can be exhausting. And yet, as a good steward, as a believer who aims to steward their children well, that's not optional. And so we want to just talk about from our own experiences, how we do that, how we aim to be faithful to the Lord and stewarding our children without going crazy.
Frankly, I don't know. Okay. Or sinning. Okay. Yes.
Heather (1:01)
Or sinning. No, that's true. Not crazy. Oh, man.
Christy Young (1:05)
Probably. Yes. Way more likely.
Heather (1:06)
Yeah.
Christy Young (1:06)
Anyway. Yes.
Heather (1:09)
Welcome back to The Gritty Gospel with Heather and Christy.
Christy Young (1:12)
Yes. We love y'all so much. Okay. So this, as I was sitting in the sermon this morning, this is what actually, I don't want to start my brain rolling for this podcast episode because I'm walking in it, the discipleship in the days. And I'm telling you, I have certain children that can really test me on every front and all throughout the day.
Heather (1:31)
Okay.
Christy Young (1:31)
And but I know the Lord's given them to me that in His kindness, they are meant for me to raise. And I think that's an incredible truth that we need to remind ourselves that He, God, has given you your lot. And so He also equips as He gives you the hard. But so here was the message, Lord, you're you are patient with me. And so I was thinking, marinating on today at church, that God has been so patient with me.
Oh, and y'all, that's so humbling. And then, so my hope really is that then, okay, Christy, God's been patient with you. So now it's your job to be patient with your children.
And then that's so humbling because I'm not always patient with my kids. And then we were reading through Romans. And then I heard the verses that say that, I think it's Romans 5, 8, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. That Christ didn't die for me, Christy, while I was perfect, because certainly I've never been perfect. No.
Heather (2:22)
Or even saved yet.
Christy Young (2:23)
No.
Heather (2:23)
You know, while we were still sinners, yes, he died for us, like, in my anger, in my, wow.
Christy Young (2:32)
Yes, girl. And so as my kids sin against me, or it's not even against me, it's not always personal. Even as my kids sin, as they are little sinful people, which they are, which I am too, as they sin against me, I have to remember that God loved me enough to die for me while I was still a sinner, so that I'm no better than my kids that drive me nuts.
Heather (2:53)
Yeah.
Christy Young (2:53)
Like, frankly, I preach. Okay, so I was thinking, so on the flip side, because we didn't want to focus on just the negative, you know, so the kids, so some of the qualities that the sinful qualities that I could give certain of my children, I could say that they were selfish, unrepentant, unthankful. Sometimes they refuse to worship, which of course, I'm not like trying to compel worship. I just, like even for example, today, today at church.
Heather (3:17)
Well, we have like, we have some that won't sing. We were doing hymns this morning. We're like, we don't hear you. And we, we're like trying to learn how to sing. I know how to sing. I feel like I'm the only one who knows how to sing. So I'm like literally to teach them. I feel like they speak.
Christy Young (3:32)
Yes.
Heather (3:33)
Like maybe one child maybe could sing, but the other one, I feel like they're speaking.
Christy Young (3:39)
That's so cute.
Heather (3:40)
I'm like, so, and then my husband does not know how to sing there. I'm like, honey, you are talking. You're, you got to like sing.
