I wanted to take the first hour today to look at what has happened during this case because I think there are a lot of people who have very strong feelings about it and who are wondering why it's dominating the national conversation and who don't quite know what to make of it because you've got two sides that are diametrically opposed on what level of culpability should be handed down to this woman, criminally speaking, legally speaking, who killed all three of her children. And it is complicated. It is complicated. I mean, let me start with this.
So, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered many people, young boys and men, and, viewer warning, cannibalized them. Was it an extremely sick, psychotic person who was torturing people before he killed them? I'm not going to get into the details because it's too dark. But suffice it to say, he tried to zombify them while they were still alive so they could stay with him forever and then would cannibalize them after killing them. This is a seriously, seriously effed up person. If anybody would ever meet the definition of legally insane, it should be somebody like a Jeffrey Dahmer. Did that happen? No. That was rejected, the insanity defense, in his case. There, like here, the debate was not will this person go free? It was will he go to the mental facility or will he go to the lockup facility, the jail facility? And in that case, the jury said, we reject the insanity defense. We find him guilty and he went to jail and didn't end well for him there.
