Hi, I'm Valerie, and you're listening to The Beauty Brains. Cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 372 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is Perry Romanowski. Hi, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:28)

Hey, Valerie, how are you? So good to see you.

Valerie George (0:31)

I'll tell you how I'm doing in just a minute, but first, on today's show, we're gonna cover a lot of questions, including does topical collagen really work? How good is the What's in My Jar website? What is the best product or ingredient for long-lasting hydration? How good is the Trophy Line Manely Long Hair Polisher as a daily leave-in? Is ascorbic tetraisopamate and tetrahexadusola ascorbate the same ingredient? And wow, what a big show. What is the isoelectric and isoionic point for hair and hair care products? And should anyone care?

Perry Romanowski (1:06)

This sounds like an exciting show.

Valerie George (1:10)

I'm excited.

Perry Romanowski (1:11)

Or at least we can make it exciting. I've got my long drink. Have you ever heard the finished long drink citrus thing?

Valerie George (1:20)

I have not.

Perry Romanowski (1:22)

Zero sugar, so, you know, it must use like that sucralose or something like that. But it still has 99 calories. How does it have that? I guess that's the alcohol.

Valerie George (1:34)

Yeah, it must be the alcohol.

Perry Romanowski (1:36)

Well, it's very citrusy and it's fine enough if you don't have a, you know, a Dr. Pepper to drink.

Valerie George (1:43)

Well, I think Dr. Pepper sounds better, but...

Perry Romanowski (1:47)

No, I do too. I just don't have one. Do you remember that song from the 70s of the Dr. Pepper theme song?

Valerie George (1:54)

We are of a different generation, Perry, so I do not remember.

Perry Romanowski (1:58)

All right, wait, it goes, I drink Dr. Pepper and I'm proud, part of an original crowd. The taste is making peppers everywhere I go. I'm a pepper, he's, you know, none of this? No.

Valerie George (2:09)

No, I think there's a reason Dr. Pepper discontinued this theme song.

Perry Romanowski (2:15)

Are you kidding me? It's still in my brain, these, you know, 40 years later. So that was a darn effective ad campaign, I have to say.

Valerie George (2:24)

Well, we'll have to let the folks of Dr. Pepper know so that we can get some free Dr. Pepper, because I love it so much.

Perry Romanowski (2:32)

Speaking of love it so much, what's with your leg?

Valerie George (2:35)

Oh, Perry, I have a torn meniscus torn.

Perry Romanowski (2:40)

Now, wait, you were out doing a triathlon, or you were biking, some big accident or something. What happened?

Valerie George (2:47)

Nope, I was replicating the Australian break dancer, Rachel Gunn, known as Ray Gunn, who was the Australian representative for break dancing at the Olympics. And I tore my meniscus and ligaments in my ankle. And then the next day, I broke my toe on my other foot.

Perry Romanowski (3:05)

Wait.

Valerie George (3:06)

I'm just kidding.

Perry Romanowski (3:07)

First of all, she scored like a zero, right?

Valerie George (3:10)

She scored zero points. But alas, I was not imitating her. I was doing something much more ordinary. It's called walking. And the next thing I know, I rolled my ankle. I was at my favorite coffee shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on my way to Los Angeles for work. And it was seven in the morning. I was the second person in the shop. I went to head back down to my car with a hot coffee and a cold coffee because I had seven hours to my next favorite coffee shop in Flagstaff. And I went to step down the steps and my ankle gave out. It rolled. I heard and felt a popping sensation.

Perry Romanowski (3:52)

What?

Valerie George (3:53)

In my leg. And I thought, this will go away in a couple hours.

And it turns out, I couldn't move my ankle in a couple hours. So that is what happened. And I currently have a bionic leg. I am in a boot. I am in a neomobilizer. And I'm awaiting directions from the surgeon. And the next day, or I should say a couple days later, I dropped my laptop and broke a toe on my other foot.

Perry Romanowski (4:22)

You dropped your laptop on your toe. Oh, my God.

Valerie George (4:26)

I am a train wreck, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (4:30)

You do seem to attract more than your fair share of bad luck.
