Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 299 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is Perry Romanowski. Hi, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:28)

Hey, Valerie. You're back from Europe. So good to see you.

Valerie George (0:32)

I'm back and ready to answer some questions on today's show about, can cosmetics increase the production of melanin in your skin? Do oils act as a sealant on skin?

Does pre-pooing hair with oil reduce the effectiveness of shampoo? Does oil on hair cause dandruff? And does head and shoulders strip oil from hair? But first, a name chit chat, I'm back for my trip.

Perry Romanowski (1:00)

You are. Your trip was what? To the oil capital of the universe, Italy?

It sounds like we've got a lot of oil questions today. And I know you're a big oil fan.

Valerie George (1:12)

Yeah.

Perry Romanowski (1:12)

But where were you?

Valerie George (1:13)

I am.

I was in Paris at a trade show called In Cosmetics Global, which is a very large show. It's kind of like the show of the year, where raw material suppliers go to showcase their ingredients. And I was there to check out what's new, have some meetings, et cetera. Wow.

Perry Romanowski (1:31)

Now, how was the pandemic piece? Was there everyone masking? Or is it just, is the pandemic over?

I don't know.

Valerie George (1:39)

Well, I mean, I felt like kind of. So they didn't have any requirements like vaccination or masks to get into the show. It was optional.

And a lot of people were mask free. Some people had masks. But it was relatively fine.

Perry Romanowski (1:54)

Well, that sounds fascinating. And it's international.

Valerie George (1:57)

People from all over, except for, I think, there's a few countries that are hot spots right now for breakouts. And I think those countries had restrictions on traveling. Usually there's like a large Asian segment to the show.

And that segment was missing from it, which is a bummer because I was in the hunt for some Korean stuff. But yeah, it was pretty well attended. And, you know, the feedback was it was a lot of quality. But I also did get to see a couple of people from Instagram, which was really cool, like Jane for making cosmetics and Anika and Annalisa from Instagram.

Perry Romanowski (2:35)

Oh, nice.

Valerie George (2:37)

You know, people, yeah, people that we regularly follow and touch base with. With online, so it was pretty, pretty cool.

Perry Romanowski (2:44)

Love it when the online and the offline worlds meet.

Valerie George (2:48)

For sure. And then I got to go to Germany afterwards and visit my family, which was pretty nice to see them again.

Perry Romanowski (2:55)

That's very cool. What sounds very international. And you know what I've been doing that's been international?

Valerie George (3:00)

What?

Perry Romanowski (3:00)

Not not traveling anywhere, but I've been memorizing the entire globe of every country and their capital. So I know one hundred and ninety seven countries and all the capitals.

Valerie George (3:14)

OK. Armenia.

Perry Romanowski (3:16)

Armenia. The capital of Armenia is Yurovan.

Valerie George (3:21)

Morocco.

Perry Romanowski (3:22)

The capital of Morocco is Rabbit. R-A-B-B-A-T.

Valerie George (3:28)

I was like, I don't know if that's how it's pronounced.

Perry Romanowski (3:33)

I cannot promise that I know the pronunciations. I just know the words. Because I only learned it from flashcards.

Valerie George (3:38)

You can visualize them.

Yeah, that's true. OK. Panama.

Perry Romanowski (3:42)

Panama is Panama City. My favorite capital.

I've never been there, but it's an interesting name. It's called Uguadugu, which is the capital of Burkina Faso.

Valerie George (3:54)

Pretty cool. You know, in eighth grade, I was participating in a Geography Bee, and I was asked the question of what the capital of Djibouti was.

Perry Romanowski (4:04)

Djibouti, yeah. I love that.

Valerie George (4:08)

Djibouti is Djibouti, yeah. And I remember that to this day.

Perry Romanowski (4:12)

Yeah. Who knew? And Djibouti starts with a D for the people out there. So it's fascinating, but I've put all those, locked all those in my brain, and you say to yourself, well, why did you do this? And I have no answer to that.

I just felt like it.

I'm coming off memorizing the whole periodic table, all 118 elements, and I'm like, okay, now let's see if I can do all the countries. So now I'm working on something new.
