Hi, I'm Perry, and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.
Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 261 I'm your host, Perry Romanowski, and with me today is Valerie George. Hello, Valerie. Hi, Perry. You know, hello, Valerie. Was that, there was a show in the 70s or the 80s, I think it was One Day at a Time or something like that. I wasn't alive. Oh, sorry.
Well, fortunately, you're live today because on today's show, we're going to be answering a bunch of questions sent in from our patrons.
Yeah, I included those about how sustainable our solid products. What do we think of the Save Ralph video? Oh, boy. What are our thoughts on the Cosdna ingredient websites? What do we think of Mother Earth products, right from Mother Earth? How do you find cosmetics that don't contain titanium dioxide? What can you do to offset problems with Retin-A and the drying? And finally, can you really wash your hair too much?
Valerie George (1:27)
Wow, this is a big show.
Perry Romanowski (1:29)
I know, seven questions. We don't usually cover that many. That's a lot of questions.
And we've got some beauty science news to chit chat about. It's more of a rant, but we will talk about that. Before we get to that, Valerie, how are you? I saw you today and you did this excellent hair talk for the Midwest SEC.
Valerie George (1:48)
I did, I did. The topic was the science of blonding, hair color and hair repair. It was a lot of fun. I didn't get to see you. It was a virtual event, but it was really fun. And I'm glad people really enjoyed the talk.
Perry Romanowski (2:03)
I did get to virtually chat you. And actually, I actually liked your previous title of the talk before. What was it? It was the science of blonding and bonding?
Yeah.
Valerie George (2:14)
Yeah. But I had to look at my audience and make a judgment call.
Perry Romanowski (2:19)
I like the rhyming structure of that.
Valerie George (2:23)
Yeah. Did you learn a lot?
Perry Romanowski (2:26)
Of course I did, yes. I learned that sun in actually works.
Valerie George (2:32)
To an extent. How well it works is the part that's up for debate.
Perry Romanowski (2:37)
I just recall when I was in high school, every girl in the summer is like, oh, I got to put in sun in. Was that really working? It never worked in my hair. But then, of course, when I was in high school, I thought that if I could sunburn my face, then that would prevent acne, and that was dumb, too.
Valerie George (2:58)
Oh my gosh. Oh, the 80s.
Perry Romanowski (3:00)
Teenagers are just dumb.
You have here in the show notes Gua Sha. What is this all about?
Valerie George (3:11)
Gua Sha.
I don't think that's how you pronounce it. I think it's Gua Sha. Maybe I'm probably pronouncing it wrong. I have no idea. But I'm going to learn this week. So last week after the episode where we talked about eye creams and I'm looking for eye creams, one of our very kind listeners said, you know what, I have a bunch of complimentary eye creams. She's an esthetician. She has her own spa. She said, let me box them up and send them to you. I saw she does Gua Sha and I'm like, wow, I've always wanted to learn how to do it.
I've, you know, watched some videos and I'm just like, ah, I don't know what I'm doing. And so that's what I'm going to do. Wednesday I'm gonna learn how to do it.
Perry Romanowski (3:58)
Is it like whittling or what? What is this?
Valerie George (4:01)
You're whittling your face away. Yes. Well, basically, it's a special shaped stone and it helps you, I think, do drainage in the face and improves skin, I guess, skin plumpness, the condition of skin, like an exfoliating kind of a thing.
No, it's really kind of like the internal part of your face. I really feel like it's for that and a lot of people do all the time. I'm excited because I always have really tense facial muscles and I'm hoping that it alleviates some of that. That's actually my favorite part of facials is the massage piece. The Hungarian lady I go to does really great face massage for like 30 minutes.
And I'm hoping I can learn something, so I'm super excited.
Perry Romanowski (4:54)
Well, that is exciting. So, yeah, we'll look forward to a report on that.
