After receiving a liberal arts education at the Monroe Academy in Elbridge, New York, and a student in the U.S.-Mexican War, James Henry Martinau spent his life as a surveyor, civil engineer, clerk, mapmaker, and pathfinder in Zion. After becoming a Latter-day Saint in 1850, Martinau went with Apostle George A. Smith to settle Parawan in southern Utah with a commitment to building God's kingdom in the West. As a leader in the Utah Territorial Militia, he conducted military drills, witnessed events surrounding the Mountain Meadows Massacre and the legal trials of its perpetrators, explored wilderness areas, submitted reports, and drew maps to record his travels throughout the entire Mormon corridor. These journals document his exploration of virgin lands in southern Utah, his laying out of town sites and farmland in Cache Valley, his participation in canal building and water projects in Arizona, and his near-death experiences while surveying rough mountainous areas. His work for the Union Pacific Railroad through Weber Canyon and across the Salt Lake Promontory and Humboldt Desert in 1868 is one of the very few complete records of its kind. And Juanita Brooks helped find these things.

Here's the thing, listeners. There were potential Mormons everywhere in the 1840s. And by everywhere, we mean mainly Europe. And by Europe, we mean mainly Scandinavia and Britain.
Oh, yes, Britain. All that blood pudding they were scarfing down there, that was the blood of Israel, friends. But here's the other thing. There was kind of an ocean in between England and Zion. Unless your name is Rita Leeds, or you play bass for Toad the Wet Sprocket, walking across the ocean is very difficult. If only there was a system or a fund.

Like, oh, I don't know, nine billion other things. Immigration from Britain traces its roots to Joseph Smith. And not in the vague Hansen-Caw-like way. Sorry, Call Family Reunion. But the concrete actually already did it way. Sorry for the we talked about this in the last episode 46 tone in my voice. But well, we talked about this in episode 46 So for those of you who are more righteous and already remembered that, you are already recalling that since the British mission had its humble beginnings way back in 1837, people had been gathering to sign which in all fairness had been somewhat of a moving target. Once the target settled on Nauvoo, the pace picked up after Brigham Young and Company went to England to invent polygamy.
Nice try there smart guy. No, to convert a whole bunch more of those limey Brits. The second wave of missionaries added many more folks to the roster.
And of course, they fell under the inevitable siren call of The Gathering. No, that's not a crappy Mormon horror movie, though now that I think about it, that is a really killer title. It's basic Mormon doctrine.
