Welcome back to the show. A New York State Assemblyman, Assemblywoman, I suppose I should say. A radical leftist has just gone viral because she contends that stealing toothpaste from Walgreens is not a crime, it's in fact a biological need.
Petty street crimes and theft are a biological need. We should not prosecute them. This is the argument coming from the left. And the right doesn't have a really good response to this. I don't know if you all were paying very close attention to it. It was really important though, because it tells us the direction that the midterms are looking, and it tells us about the direction of the respective political parties. So I won't get to all the races, but I'll get to a handful of them that are illustrative. Probably the biggest race was the primary for Governor of Florida. You had my pal Byron Donalds running down there. Byron Donalds, a very Trump loyal MAGA member of Congress, pretty prominent member of Congress. He was running to succeed Ron DeSantis, and he faced a few challengers. One was Jay Collins, who was a pretty serious candidate, but didn't have the poll numbers to overcome Byron. And then there was the meme candidate, who was the favorite of a lot of people on the internet, and he was very eccentric, he was very good at media. That was James Fishback. And when I was at the University of Idaho at a TPSA event with Matt Walsh, we were both hanging out on stage, and someone asked us about this race. They said, Michael, you guys, I forget the exact wording of the question, but something to the effect of, you guys are missing the big trend in the Republican Party, which is that candidates like James Fishback are really rising up. James Fishback, who ran this campaign, that was pretty overtly racialized, little bit anti-Semitic. It was basically just Twitter, but as a gubernatorial campaign. He called Byron Byrone, because it sounded more black or something. It was all just kind of memes and trollery and provocation. Anyway, this kid at the University of Idaho said, you guys are missing this big trend in the Republican Party. I said, I don't think we are. I think actually by bringing up the Fishback campaign, you're underscoring our point that the Republican Party is actually in pretty solid shape and the coalition is pretty strong. Because Fishback at that point was polling at, I don't know, a few percent, five percent or something. So the results finally come in. As many of the Internet excentrics were expecting, a big upset from James Fishback. What's the final score? Final score in a pretty crowded primary was Byron getting about 48 percent, so almost half the votes. Jay Collins mounts a serious enough challenge, but nowhere near enough to really matter. He got one in four voters. And then James Fishback was a little north of 10 percent. And then you had a few other guys, eight and a half percent, four percent, one point six percent. So Byron just totally blew everybody out of the water, including James Fishback, who was running as the kind of Internet, GROIPER, alt-right sort of candidate. Okay, there's another race that involved a kind of Internet-y, right-wing, fringe candidate. And that was this guy, Dan Bilzerian, about whom I must confess, I know basically nothing. But he was running as this real, running very racial, anti-Semitic, those kind of policies.
