Are you still choosing beige because it feels safer?
Are you pinning colorful rooms, then talking yourself out of every bold idea because it might look silly, clash, date quickly, or make your partner say, what have you done? In this episode, I'm talking about the dopamine decor trend and why it might be the permission slip your nervous little decorating brain has been waiting for.
Not to turn your house into a rainbow explosion, but to help you use color pattern and playful home decor in a way that makes your home feel happier, braver, and a little less boring. If you're ready to add some sparks of joy to your home, pop in your earbuds and let's get into it.
Welcome to the Daring Home Decor podcast. Are you tired of playing it safe with your interior design? Are you overwhelmed with choice and just want simple steps to pull off cohesive and unique decor?
I'm your host, Cara Baker, virtual interior designer and bold decor coach. I'll help you get brave, find your style, and create a home with pizzazz. So grab your paintbrush, put on those overalls, and let's get decorating.
Welcome to the show. I'm so glad and happy that you've joined me.
And today's episode is about permission to get on the dopamine decor trend. And we're having another heat wave here in the UK, so I might be having little sips of water in between this. So please forgive me if I do.
Just having one now.
I think I filled up my water bottle for the second time today. Normally it's a big one. Normally one bottle lasts me the whole day. But yeah, we're a third of the way through the day, and I'm filling it up already, because it's so warm. Okay, I just want to start off by saying that, even though I'm referring to dopamine decor as a trend, I personally view it more as a new interior style. So in my opinion, it is a trend, but at the same time, it's a new style. So something that I hope will stay around for a long, long time, and we can add it to all the other ways that we describe the styles that we've got in our home. So dopamine decor, as far as I'm concerned, it's a new style. You may have been viewing it as a trend in either way, it doesn't really matter, but maybe you've thought about dopamine decor if you've heard of it, that is. Maybe you've never heard of it, in which case I do have a previous episode explaining all about it. So go and have a listen to that. But maybe when you think of dopamine decor, you imagine everything just being too wild, loud, or not really for normal houses. And that's not really what dopamine decor is about.
It's not about trying to turn every room into a rainbow disco, unless that's what you want, of course. It's about using interior design, color, pattern, and personality to create a home that gives you little sparks of joy. And don't we need little sparks of joy? I've got some sparks of joy with the gorgeous weather we've got here this week in the UK. And as well, at the same time that I'm recording this podcast episode, England are through to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. So yay!
Although by the time this goes out, we may have been knocked out, or you never know, we may have won. I'm gonna say it, we will have won by the time this podcast episode goes out. Won the World Cup 2026
Anyway, enough about the football. Let's talk about dopamine decal. That's what we're here for. And I will just give you a little bit of an oversight into what it actually is if you don't already know.
It's so simple. It's basically decorating with things that lift your mood and give you a dopamine hit, hence the phrase that's been coined, dopamine decal. And you can use this. You can do this in various ways. You can do it by using colors, shapes, print, art, texture, lighting, and pieces that make you smile, pieces you're obsessed with, pieces you love, and not following a strict interior design rule book. And this episode is more than me getting giddy over another TikTok trend. It's actually based on reality because research and trend reports are showing a proper shift away from beige, blank, and overly safe interiors, and towards homes with more color, personality, nostalgia, let's say it right, nostalgia, texture, and joy. Pinterest's 2026 trend report includes bolder, more playful home decor ideas, like circus-inspired interiors. Doesn't that sound fabulous? And recent design coverage is talking about beige on beige, losing its shine, while more personal, collected, colorful homes are coming through. And I personally think the reason for this is because, you know, we all need a bit of cheering up, don't we? We don't want to be serious all the time. There's enough serious things going on in the world, and I think everybody just wants a little bit of light relief. And this interior style is absolutely perfect for it. A Marie Claire article from August 2025 titled, dopamine decor is giving grazed minimalism a run for its money.
