El Niño is strengthening with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026, 2027 During that October to December timeframe, there is a 75% chance of a historic event that would exceed the strength of previous El Niño events dating back to 1954

What is going on? Good afternoon. I'm Drew Mariani. Good to be with you today. That was Fox News. Fox Weather, I really should say about how the El Niño might affect weather this fall. Let's take a look at what it means for your future. I saw something this morning, and I thought I'd run this by you. August just tied for the hottest month ever.

August is tied for the hottest month ever measured globally. Is that not crazy? I don't know where you're living right now. It didn't seem like that to me, but I guess it is another guy keeping the records. At the same time, we've got this extraordinarily powerful El Niño developing in the Pacific, one that could have significant consequences for weather this winter. Again, I don't know where you're living right now, but woo, get ready. It could be something else. So what's really happening here, right? How much is climate change? How much is El Niño? How much of what you hear is just exaggerated, right? And as a person of faith, I mean, you can care deeply about God's creation without buying into the fear or political ideology, and that's what we're gonna talk about in just a moment. Mike Maguire's gonna be joining me. He's a very gifted meteorologist. He's been a friend of this show for years, and he was actually chief meteorologist at WEHT TV in Evanston, Indiana, but now he's a successful full-time commodities trader. We'll find out how this is gonna affect those commodities as well. So if you got a question you want to join us, feel free to dial in triple 8-914-9149.

Triple 8-914-9149. So it's turning, you know, it's been a warm summer. I think everybody can agree on that, it's turning into a warm fall. In fact, according to the European Climate Service, Copernicus, I think is what they, if I remember correctly, last month it was the hottest August on record. NPR reported that last month the world average temperature was about 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 16.9 degrees Celsius. And technically it was a 100th of a degree Celsius more than all the all-time global marks set back in July of 2023 But just to put stuff in the perspective, we'll get Mike's take on this. These records that I'm talking about here, and you can get down to all the data, they only go back to the 1880s. I'd say we're looking at 146 years, 150 years. It's a blip, just a blip on Earth's 4.5 billion year timeline. Now, I'm not opposed to them. I think it's important to keep these records. I'm glad we're finally doing it. But let's explore what it means.

There's some other hyperbole in the headline, too, and that's another weather headline that I was sharing with you. They have a super, they're calling it a super El Niño going on right now. And as time goes on, it becomes clear that it's gathering more strength.

They're saying it can go on for quite a while. So what is an El Niño? What is a super El Niño? How does it influence weather patterns all over the world? And what does it mean for your winter, which is looming? I'm joined right now by Mike Maguire. Mike, thank you for being with us today. Good afternoon.

Mike Maguire (3:50)

Hey Drew, long time no speak with and thanks very much for inviting me back on the program.

Drew Mariani (3:56)

I always love talking to you. It's great to have you with us today. And I will send a shout out to Patty Maguire, who's a contributor to the program. She told me you guys were related. I didn't realize that. She's a great author. She wrote her most recent book, what would Monica do? And of course, I know her husband, Mark, but you were related to Mark, is that how, is that the connection?

Mike Maguire (4:14)

Well, actually, Patty's my sister.

Drew Mariani (4:16)

Patty's your sister, okay, there you go.

Mike Maguire (4:18)

Patty is my sister. I'm the oldest of six.

Patty came after me by a year, then Colleen a year after that, then Marianne a year after that, then Gary three years, and Brian three years after that. A nice big, happy Catholic family that went to St. Alphonsus School in Dearborn, Michigan.
