Today, in the nerdy news you need to know about, Tim Schafer joins me to talk about Double Fine's future. Not yet, get out of here. 2XKO is ending development and Dave Bautista is officially Kratos and God of War. We'll talk about all this and more because this is Kinda Funny Games Daily.
What's up everybody? Welcome to Kinda Funny Games Daily for Friday, August 21st, 2026 I'm one of your hosts, Greg Miller, alongside Double Fine's legendary game developer. The face of independent video games once again.
**Tim Schafer** (0:58)
Tim Schafer, I'm here. I brought this newspaper to prove that I'm alive. It's today's paper. It's not AI.
**Greg Miller** (1:04)
Yeah, this isn't AI.
**Tim Schafer** (1:04)
I don't want to make sure you get a good shot of it because you know how hard it is to find a newspaper.
**Greg Miller** (1:08)
It's bad. It's bad trying to find a newspaper these days.
**Tim Schafer** (1:10)
Like Mitch McConnell, I'm alive. Hi everybody.
**Greg Miller** (1:13)
How's it feel to be alive?
**Tim Schafer** (1:14)
It feels good.
**Greg Miller** (1:14)
Yeah?
**Tim Schafer** (1:15)
Yeah, I never take that for granted. Yeah, so we are an independent game company yet again.
**Greg Miller** (1:20)
You sure are. We have lots to talk about about it. All right. This is a weird mashup of a GamesCast Games Daily because like obviously we got the news and Bautista. That's huge.
**Tim Schafer** (1:30)
Yeah.
**SPEAKER_4** (1:30)
I walk alone.
**Greg Miller** (1:31)
But then more importantly, you guys are just breaking news right now about what's going on with your future. So I want to dive right into that after I remind you that this is kind of funny games daily each and every weekday nerdiest news you need to know about in the video games world. If you're watching live super chat with your questions for Tim Schafer and of course with your comments, thoughts and opinions about the day's news on youtube.com/kindafunnygames.
We couldn't do this at our producers on patreon.com/kindafunny. So thank you, Carl J. Cubs to make a Buster Delaney, the song twining and lacks no mad for now. Let's begin the show with what is and forever will be the Roper report.
**SPEAKER_4** (2:04)
Did it did it did it did it did it for some new six items on the report. So big does it great job.
**Greg Miller** (2:19)
We start with story number one, the future of Double Fine.
**Tim Schafer** (2:23)
Oh, you're here to break the news.
**Greg Miller** (2:25)
You're ready to learn from this close to you too. Like I told you, I'd be close to you. You gotta be ready.
**Tim Schafer** (2:28)
You gotta be ready to go. I gotta hold it like this.
**SPEAKER_4** (2:30)
You don't have to.
**Greg Miller** (2:30)
But if you're going to turn me like you naturally are going to, you want to.
**SPEAKER_4** (2:32)
There you go.
**Tim Schafer** (2:33)
And then just like we're here, we're live party Tim Schafer.
**Greg Miller** (2:37)

**Tim Schafer** (2:38)
My emotional support.
**Greg Miller** (2:40)
He's the only one we got right now.
**Tim Schafer** (2:41)
Don't ruin him.
**Greg Miller** (2:42)
OK, don't get him too oily.
**Tim Schafer** (2:43)
Yeah. Don't get him excited or pee in your lap. You remember old party.
**Greg Miller** (2:48)
This isn't about Portillo, my dead dog. This is instead about your very much alive company.
**Tim Schafer** (2:52)
Yeah.
**Greg Miller** (2:52)
Double Fine.
**Tim Schafer** (2:53)
Yeah. We were, I mean, if you're new and not like me and old. But we, Double Fine was around for 19 years, and then we were joined Xbox for seven years. Yeah. Seven years.
**Greg Miller** (3:03)
Crazy. I went fast.
**Tim Schafer** (3:04)
And now we're independent again.
Yes. Yeah. Yeah. We emerged. Jesus Christ.
**Greg Miller** (3:10)
Thank you, Barrett.
I want to talk about so much about it in the how, the why, I imagine the fear, then the joy, maybe the fear again, the turmoil of it all and yada, yada, yada. But I think most important is that you're here to talk about the company's future because we've known about this. This has been in the news. We've talked about you guys going independent again. We just saw compulsion yesterday announced very similarly. Today we're corner operated. But you guys are going one step further. Right now, a Kickstarter project has been launched. Okay. I'm sorry. It's been the page has been published. It doesn't launch until August 31st. That's when you can join. But we do have Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot, a Double Fine Productions Game Jam documentary and Kickstarter campaign launches August 31st and runs through most of September. But you can sign up here and now to get notified. We're going to do a game jam live on the Internet in which our backers will get to choose which of our myriad of ideas get made into four new prototypes. And which of those final four will become a real parentheses small game. You may even snag some sweet merchant merchables and rarities along the way.
