Do women really watch less porn?
Thanks for asking. A Swiss survey from 2023 suggests they do. 73% of women said they never watched pornography compared to just 17% of men. Talking about porn consumption is still taboo and even more so for women. Sexologist and psychotherapist Patrizia Anex says that's no surprise. Admitting to watching and enjoying porn is still frowned upon, she explains. Many women do it quietly, fearing judgement. But do women actually watch less porn or just keep it to themselves?
In the UK, women make up around 29% of Pornhub's audience, according to Ofcom's Online Nation 2024 report. While men still account for the majority of viewers, women's presence on adult platforms has been steadily rising. And when they do watch, their preferences often lean towards categories like lesbian, amateur and threesome, content genres that tend to focus more on authenticity and mutual pleasure. And how do women feel about the porn that's out there? Many remain uncomfortable. A Marie Claire USA survey from 2015 found that nearly 60% of respondents disliked how women were portrayed, objectified, stereotyped and often stripped of agency. The tropes are familiar. The exaggerated bodies, the submissive roles, the focus on male pleasure. That's partly because the industry is still dominated by men. Only around 3% of directors are women. Mainstream porn is repetitive and sexist. Women are often shown as props for male satisfaction, said Swedish filmmaker Erika Lust in an interview with Le Temps. It's no wonder many women turn to lesbian content where female pleasure takes centre stage. So why are more women watching now?
Because porn itself is changing. Online access makes it easier, more private and less taboo. But the real shift comes from new alternatives. Ethical porn, female-directed productions and audio erotica formats that feel more authentic, more intimate and less stereotypical.
Female pleasure is also being claimed more openly. According to sexologist Margot Tero, conversations around sexuality have become more normalised through social media. While the growing popularity of sex toys, such as the womaniser, has helped many women explore and embrace their own pleasure. There you have it.
Now you know if women really watch less porn. In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you really will know for sure.
