Hi, this is Perry, and you're listening to The Beauty Brains, where real scientists answer your beauty question for Tuesday, April 15th, 2014
Hello, and welcome to The Beauty Brains. I am your host, Perry Romanowski, and with me as always, Randy Schuller. Hello, Randy.
Randy Schuller (0:25)
Buy our book.
Perry Romanowski (0:28)
Well, you just don't beat around the bush there, right?
Randy Schuller (0:32)
Well, you know, hello, everybody. You know, we'd like people to buy our latest book, which is, It's Okay to Have Lead in Your Lipstick.
And if you stop drinking tea and read the tagline.
Perry Romanowski (0:44)
And answers to other beauty questions you're dying to know.
Randy Schuller (0:48)
Right, so we, you know, we usually bury that message about buying the book at the end of the podcast. So I just want to get it out of the way, right here, right at the beginning, just buy the frickin book. Back to you, Perry.
Perry Romanowski (1:00)
And if people get that book, what are they gonna get from that book? I mean, of course, they'll learn about lead in lipstick.
Randy Schuller (1:06)
They're gonna get 300 scintillating pages of answers to beauty questions.
Perry Romanowski (1:12)
And entertaining, 300 entertaining pages.
Randy Schuller (1:15)
Highly entertaining. And if you order it off our website, you'll get our autograph.
Perry Romanowski (1:20)
Oh yeah, the autograph. It's not just educational, it's entertaining. It's just infotainment, really.
Randy Schuller (1:28)
All right.
Perry Romanowski (1:29)
Ah, boy, you know what I was doing this morning?
Randy Schuller (1:31)
No, what's that?
Perry Romanowski (1:32)
Well, I just recently launched this new website, this new online training program, which teaches people how to create cosmetics, called Practical Cosmetic Formulating. Yeah, you can get there through my other website, the chemist corner.
Randy Schuller (1:46)
Yeah, the one you cheat on me behind my back with. Yeah, I know, I'm very familiar with that.
Perry Romanowski (1:52)
Well, you did, it's just been around for a while. But you know, in creating that, I've had the opportunity to look through old formulation books.
And this one I got from 1938, called The Cosmetic Formulary, it's by Bennett. But just one of the things I found interesting about this is I'm looking through some of these formulas, and they have this thing called bear grease. It's a bear grease cosmetic, like bear. But here are the ingredients to bear grease.
Randy Schuller (2:27)
Like B-A-R-E.
Perry Romanowski (2:28)
Yeah, B-A-R-E, grease.
It's some sort of a cream, it doesn't say what you use it for. I guess it's, maybe it's a type of makeup remover, because it's in the makeup remover section. But, so here's what's in bear grease. And this is why it's from 1938 Beef marrow, four grams of that.
Veal suet. Suet, that would be suet, sure. What is veal suet?
Randy Schuller (2:57)
It's like ground up meat parts. I think it's mostly fat.
Perry Romanowski (3:03)
So we have beef marrow, veal suet, and formaldehyde.
Color and perfume as desired. Yeah, so that's The Beauty from 1938 I think technology has changed a bit since then, but I do really love old formulation books.
Randy Schuller (3:25)
I think that should be a regular feature of the program. I love that.
Perry Romanowski (3:30)
All right. And speaking of regular features, you have a beauty science thing we're doing today.
Randy Schuller (3:36)
You know what, now, since you've given us that great little intro, I think it's time to play Beauty Science or Bulls**t.
Perry Romanowski (3:46)
All right. All right.
Randy Schuller (3:48)
So this is the game where I give you three beauty science headlines. Two of them are true. One is made up, and you have to pick the fake story. Now, kids, you can play along at home if you just hit the pause button on your iPod or Zune or whatever you use before I give the answer, and you can see if you're smarter than Perry.
Actually, they've actually done correlational testing to show that if people can beat you on this game, they are actually your intellectual superior. It's true.
Perry Romanowski (4:16)
Because I think the last time I checked, my IQ was like 144 But it was an internet IQ test, so I don't know how valid that is.
Randy Schuller (4:27)
Well, you slip that in, you know, like people won't notice, but your favorite number is 44, and you just mention that at every opportunity.
Perry Romanowski (4:33)
Wow, yeah, that's weird how that happened.
Randy Schuller (4:35)
Anyway, all right, back to the game. So here are your three headlines. Number one, the first commercial product delivered to the moon could be a Japanese sunscreen.
