This football weekend produced far more losers than winners.
That is not a hot take. That is a box score fact that somehow still feels impossible. The winners list fit on a napkin. Deshaun Watson won his first game in more than two years and looked like a quarterback doing it. Patrick Mahomes threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns and remembered what MVP football looked like. Trinidad Chambliss made Lane Kiffin look silly for walking out of Oxford. Joe Burrow and the Bengals went 2-0 and embarrassed Houston on the road. Brian Flores put a stamp on the most talented assistant coach in the NFL by shutting down Ben Johnson's Chicago offense. That is the whole board. Everybody else spent the weekend collecting bruises, excuses, and film they will hate today.
The losers needed a second page.

Start with the brand that sells swagger for a living. Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes, lost 41-7 to Northwestern. Hallelujah. Not close, not competitive, a mugging.
Then Coach Prime ripped his gang of mercenaries for laughing about it. Take a listen.
Deion Sanders (1:48)
Well, I saw some guys fighting and fighting through it, offensively and defensively. Now, you did see a couple of guys that I just got on because I don't understand how much, how you can have joy and loss, especially when I'm upset and I'm walking right behind you.
I don't understand that. I can't never understand that because I want to win every darn thing and I can't understand how in the world do you find joy or you could find a laughing matter when I'm right behind you walking in. I don't understand that. And I addressed it and I'm going to put my foot in it, not on it.
Jason Whitlock (2:23)
When your product is toughness and your locker room is giggling through a blowout, the scoreboard is only half the indictment. The culture is the rest. Northwestern did not just beat Colorado, Northwestern graded the entire Coach Prime experiment in public and the grade came back in red ink.
Back to the NFL or over to the NFL, Aaron Glenn belongs right next to Coach Prime in the NFL side of the ledger. The Jets had Green Bay buried, 10 point lead, home opener, about 11 minutes from their first 2-0 start since 2015
They blinked, drifted into overtime and lost 20 to 17 The collapse was bad. The clock management was worse. Late in regulation with timeouts in his pocket, Glenn watched the final minute die without getting the ball back for one last shot at a winning field goal. Matt LaFleur said he was confused by it. National media called it malpractice. Glenn stood at the podium and could not explain how he managed to clock at the end of regulation. He was hired to kill the same old Jets with the game in his hands.
He dug the corpse back up and then fumbled the obituary.
Bill Belichick squandered a half-time lead, lost to Clemson, then acted like a man too big with a handshake line, blowing off Dabo Swinney in the aftermath. Legends do not get a free pass on class when the result already stings. Nick Saban, the elder statesman of college football, went on college game day with Pat McAfee and turned the morning into a bit about drugs and gummies. The sports conscience did stand up. That is where we are. Lamar Jackson tossed a horrible interception and handed New Orleans Saints a shocking victory. Aaron Rodgers played like a quarterback three years past his expiration date. Nate Burleson dressed like a clown on the set of NFL Today and reminded everybody that the pregame circus will always find a costume. North Carolina State and quarterback CJ Bailey snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with one of the dumbest errors in the history of football. Turning a win into folklore for all the wrong reasons. The injury board was merciless. Caleb Williams left with a hamstring. Jayden Daniels tripped and dislocated his elbow. Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert fell to 0-2. So did Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield. So did DeMeco Ryans and CJ Stroud. Serious franchises, serious names, zero wins after two weeks. Bad news did not pick a conference. It sprayed the whole map. You can call it one of the worst football weekends of all time. I will call it one of the most honest. Football stripped the costumes off the public. The mercenary program got exposed. The new coach got the old ending and could not diagram the last minute. The legend looked small. The star quarterback gifted a game. The media clown found a wardrobe. The smart team found a way to lose with the ball in the end zone. So who owns the weekend?
