Forget Me Not

September 8, 2026

What difficulty are we facing right now that makes it hard to recognise God's presence? Can we bring it to Jesus today and trust that our present struggle is not the end of the story?

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

SPEAKER_2 (0:21)

He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said, Blessed are you who are poor. God's kingdom is yours. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled.

Who weep now? For you will laugh.

Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil for the son of man's sake. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold. Your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets. But woe to you, who are rich. For you have received your consolation. Woe to you, you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Whoa, when men speak well of you. For their fathers did the same thing to the prophets.

SPEAKER_1 (1:28)

The Gospel of the Lord.

Blessed are you who are poor. For the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult to you and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and live for joy on that day. Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.

It can be difficult to understand these words of Jesus. How can someone who is poor, hungry, grieving, rejected or insulted be called blessed? Jesus is not saying that suffering itself is good. He is speaking to people who know what it means to struggle and telling them that their present situation does not define their future with God.

The hungry will be satisfied. Those who weep will laugh. Those who are rejected because they follow Christ have a reward that cannot be taken away from them. We often measure our lives by what is happening right now. When things go well, we feel blessed. When something is taken from us, when a prayer remains unanswered, or when we are hurt by someone, it becomes harder to see God's goodness. But Jesus asks us to look beyond what we can see today.

There will be seasons when following him costs us something. We may have to make choices others do not understand. We may lose approval because we refuse to compromise what we believe. We may carry disappointments that have no immediate answer. In those moments, Jesus reminds us where our hope belongs, not in having everything work out according to our plans, but in knowing that we belong to God.

Our circumstances can change. People's opinions can change. What we have today can be gone tomorrow. But the kingdom Jesus promises is not temporary. That gives us a reason to keep going, even on days when life feels far from blessed. What difficulty are we facing right now that makes it hard to recognize God's presence? Can we bring it to Jesus today and trust that our present struggle is not the end of the story? Lord Jesus, when life is difficult and we struggle to see Your goodness, help us remember Your promises. Give us strength when we are discouraged, hope when we are hurting, and courage when following You comes at a cost. Help us place our trust in You and in the life You have promised us. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
