Thank you. Thank you. My brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest. Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child and set him by his side and said to them, Whoever receives this little child in my name, receives me. Whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.

John answered, Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him because he doesn't follow with us. Jesus said to him, Don't forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.

The Gospel of the Lord.

An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, Whoever receives this child in my name, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives the one who sends me. For the one who is least among all of you, is the one who is the greatest.

The disciples had been travelling beside Jesus, listening to his teaching and witnessing things few people had ever seen. Yet an argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest. It feels surprisingly ordinary. Even after everything they had experienced, they were still concerned about position. Who mattered more? Who stood closest to Jesus? Who deserved greater recognition?

We may never argue openly about who is the greatest, but comparison can easily enter our lives in less obvious ways. We notice who receives more attention, whose work is appreciated, who appears more successful, or who seems to be moving ahead while we remain where we are. Even when we do something good, part of us can still hope someone notices. When another person receives the recognition we wanted, disappointment can reveal how much that recognition mattered to us. Jesus knew what was happening beneath the disciples' argument. Luke tells us that he realized the intention of their hearts. He did not respond by choosing the best disciple or explaining who had accomplished the most. Instead, he brought a child beside him.

In the society of that time, a child had little status or influence. A child could not offer Jesus' prestige, improve his reputation, or repay him for his attention. Yet, Jesus placed the child beside him and told the disciples that receiving such a child in his name meant receiving him. In doing so, Jesus completely changed their understanding of greatness. They were looking upward, trying to decide who deserved the highest place. Jesus directed their attention toward someone they might easily overlook. This challenges the way we judge the value of what we do. We often notice visible achievements because they are easy to measure. A promotion, an award, praise from others, a growing business, a successful project, or recognition for something we have done can make us feel that our efforts matter. There is nothing wrong in being grateful when our work bears fruit. The problem begins when recognition becomes the measure of our worth, or when another person's success makes us feel smaller. Jesus offers another measure. Greatness in his eyes can appear in actions that receive little attention. It may be caring for someone who cannot repay us, giving time to a person others ignore. Helping without expecting credit, listening when we would rather move on, or doing something necessary even when nobody will ever know we did it. These moments rarely attract applause, but they reveal what is happening in the heart. There is also freedom in Jesus' teaching. If we no longer need to prove that we are greater than someone else, we can appreciate another person's success without feeling threatened by it. We can serve without wondering whether anyone noticed. We can accept that some of the most meaningful things we do may never be recognized publicly. God sees them.

The one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest. Jesus is not asking us to think poorly of ourselves or pretend that our gifts do not matter. He is teaching us not to build our identity around rank, attention or comparison.

Our gifts are meant to be used, not displayed as proof that we matter more than someone else. The disciples wanted to know who stood above everyone else. Jesus showed them a child. Perhaps that image is worth carrying into our own day. When we find ourselves comparing, competing or wondering whether our efforts are being noticed, we can remember where Jesus directed the disciples' attention. Greatness in the Kingdom of God is not about standing above others. It is found in how we love, serve and receive the people placed before us. Where do you find yourself comparing your progress, achievements or recognition to someone else's? Can you think of a person in your life whom you have overlooked because they seem unimportant to what you are trying to accomplish?
