Forget Me Not

September 25, 2026

Is there something happening in our life right now that we cannot understand? Instead of trying to force an answer, can we bring that question honestly to Jesus and ask for enough faith to follow him one day at a time?

Thank you. Through my most previous thought. Therefore, I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin All the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

September 26, 2026 Saturday of the 25th week in Ordinary Time. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

But while all were marvelling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples.

Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men. But they didn't understand this saying. It was concealed from them that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

The Gospel of the Lord.

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, Pay attention to what I'm telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to man. But they did not understand this saying. Its meaning was hidden from them, so that they should not understand it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying. The people around Jesus were amazed. They had witnessed things they could hardly explain, and his deeds had left a strong impression on them. Yet, while everyone was caught up in what Jesus was doing, he turned to his disciples and spoke about something very different. The son of man is to be handed over to man. It was not what they expected to hear. They had seen his power, but now he was speaking about suffering. They had seen people amazed by him, but he was telling them that rejection was coming. The disciples did not understand. That part of the Gospel feels very familiar because there are times when we do not understand what God is doing either. We pray for something and receive an answer we do not expect. We make plans that appear to be going well only for circumstances to change.

We believe we are moving in the right direction, then suddenly find ourselves facing disappointment, uncertainty, or a door that refuses to open. We may wonder why God would allow things to unfold this way when another path appears so much better to us.

The disciples had their own picture of what following Jesus would look like. They had witnessed His miracles and seen the crowds gathering around Him. From where they stood, things appeared to be moving toward greater recognition and success. Jesus knew otherwise. The road ahead included betrayal, suffering and the cross. What looked like defeat would eventually become the very means through which God brought salvation. We often see only the part of the story we are living today. God sees what comes before it, what comes after it, and how everything fits together.

That does not make disappointment painless or uncertainty easy. It does remind us that our inability to understand something does not mean God has lost control of it. There is another detail worth noticing. The disciples were afraid to ask Jesus what he meant. Their confusion was understandable. But their fear kept them from bringing their questions to him. We can do the same thing in our relationship with God. Sometimes we carry questions that we hesitate to express because we think faith means we should already have the answers. We may even feel guilty for wondering why something happened or why God has not responded in the way we hoped. Yet, faith does not mean pretending that we understand. We can come before Jesus and bring our questions, disappointment, frustration, and even our fear. We can simply say, Lord, we do not understand this. Help us. There is no need to hide what is already in our hearts.

Jesus asked His disciples to pay attention because what He was telling them would matter later.

They could not grasp it at that moment, but one day, they would look back and understand His words differently.

We may have experiences like that too. Sometimes, something that makes no sense today can look very different months or years later. At other times, we may never receive the full explanation we want. Faith still gives us a way forward. We keep walking beside Christ, not because we understand every part of the journey, but because we have come to trust the one who leads us.

Lord Jesus, there are times when we do not understand what is happening or why the road before us has become difficult. Help us not to be afraid of bringing our questions to you. When we cannot see where you are leading us, strengthen our trust in you. Give us the faith to keep following you even when we do not yet understand. Amen.
