Thank you.
Thank you. My brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. September 22nd, 2026, Tuesday of the 25th week in Ordinary Time. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

His mother and brothers came to him, and they could not come near him for the crowd. Some people told him, Your mother and your brothers stand outside, desiring to see you.
But he answered them, My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.

The Gospel of the Lord.
The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him, but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to see you. He said to them in reply, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.
At first, Jesus' response in today's Gospel can sound surprising. His mother and relatives have come to see him, yet instead of stopping what he is doing and going out to meet them, Jesus speaks about a different kind of family. My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it. He is not rejecting Mary or treating his family as unimportant. In fact, Mary herself is one of the clearest examples of what Jesus is describing. She heard God's word and responded through the way she lived. Jesus uses this moment to teach the crowd and us that our relationship with God is not built simply on association, familiarity or words. It grows when we listen and respond.
There is an important difference between hearing something and allowing it to affect what we do. We can hear the Gospel at Mass every week. We can read scripture each morning, listen to homilies, follow Christian content, and know many of Jesus' teachings. All of these can help us grow in faith, but Jesus takes us one step further. What happens after we hear? God's Word is meant to enter the ordinary parts of our lives, including moments when following it costs us something. When Jesus teaches forgiveness, it matters when we are dealing with someone who has hurt us. When he teaches us not to judge, it matters when we are tempted to speak badly about another person. When he tells us to love our neighbour, it matters when that neighbour is difficult, demanding or inconvenient. Hearing is the beginning. Acting is where the teaching becomes part of our life. This can be uncomfortable because it is much easier to agree with Jesus than to follow him when his words challenge what we want to do.
We may know that we should forgive, yet continue replaying an old hurt. We may know that we should trust God, yet spend days consumed by things beyond our control. We may know that we should be generous, yet hesitate when generosity requires our time, attention or resources. Sometimes, the gap between what we believe and how we live becomes wider than we realize. Today's Gospel invites us to notice that gap and consider what needs to change. Jesus also gives us something deeply encouraging. He says that anyone who hears God's word and acts on it belongs to his family. We are not being invited to admire Jesus from a distance. We are being invited into a relationship that changes how we live. Each time we choose to follow his word, especially when doing so is difficult, we allow that relationship to shape us. It does not require dramatic acts. Much of Christian life happens through small decisions that nobody else notices. Holding back a hurtful reply, checking on someone who is struggling, admitting when we are wrong, refusing to join in gossip, giving someone another chance, making time for prayer during a busy day, or choosing what is right when an easier option is available.
We will not always get this right. There will be days when we hear God's word and still choose differently.
There will be teachings we struggle to live out and habits that take time to change. Jesus' words are not asking us to become perfect overnight. They call us to become people whose faith moves beyond listening into living. We can begin again through the next decision in front of us. The question is not simply, did we hear what Jesus said? It is, what will we do about what we have heard?
Is there something God has been showing us through scripture that we already understand but have not yet acted upon? What is the one practical step we can take today to live it out?
Lord Jesus, help us not only to hear Your Word, but to live according to it. Give us the courage to follow You when Your teaching challenges our habits, our pride or our preferences. May our faith be seen in the choices we make, the way we treat others, and the way we respond to You each day. Draw us closer to You and teach us to live as members of Your family. Amen.
