To what, then, should I compare the people of this generation?

What are they like? They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, saying, We piped to you, and you didn't dance. We mourned, and you didn't weep. For John the Baptizer came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, he has a demon. The son of man has come, eating and drinking, and you say, behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. Wisdom is justified by all her children.

The Gospel of the Lord. Jesus said to the crowds, To what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another. We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep. Jesus compares the people of his generation to children who refuse to respond. Play joyful music, and they will not dance. Sing something sorrowful, and they will not moan. Whatever is offered, they find a reason to reject it. Jesus was speaking about how people responded to John the Baptist and to him. John lived a strict and disciplined life, and people said there was something wrong with him. Jesus ate and drank with others, and they criticized him for that too.

The problem was not the approach. They had already decided not to listen. We can fall into the same habit. Sometimes, we ask God for guidance, but when the answer does not match what we want, we dismiss it. We may want him to speak through a certain person, solve a problem in a particular way, or give us a clear sign. When things unfold differently, we keep waiting for another answer. Faith also asks us to examine our willingness to respond. God may already be speaking through scripture, through someone who tells us something we do not want to hear, through an unexpected change in our plans, or through a truth we have been avoiding.

If we reject every invitation because it does not come in the form we expected, the problem may no longer be that we cannot hear God. It may be that we have become too fixed on how we want him to answer.

Is there something God has been showing us that we keep resisting because it is not the answer we wanted?

Lord Jesus, open our hearts to recognize your voice even when you speak in ways we did not expect. Help us put aside our own demands and respond when you call us. Give us the humility to listen, the wisdom to understand, and the courage to follow you. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
