When following Christ becomes difficult or costly, do we begin to question God's presence, or can we continue walking with Him even when we do not understand where the road is leading?

I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I've done and in what I've failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I ask Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. September 15th, 2026, Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Jesus' father and mother were amazed at what was said about him, and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted, and you yourself, a sword will pierce, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
Mary had already said yes to God. She accepted the unexpected pregnancy, traveled to Bethlehem, gave birth far from home, and welcomed the shepherds who came looking for her child. Now as she and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Simeon gave her words that no mother would want to hear, a sword will pierce her. Mary was chosen and blessed, yet that did not protect her from suffering. Years later, she would stand before the cross and watch her son suffer and die. Her yes to God brought great joy into her life, but it also asked more of her than she could have known at the beginning. We can sometimes expect faith to make life easier. We pray, try to follow Christ, and hope that things will work out. Then, illness comes, relationships break down, plans fail, or someone we love suffers. We may wonder why God allowed it when we were trying to remain faithful.
Mary shows us that hardship is not proof that God has abandoned us. She remained with Jesus through the parts of his life that she could not fully understand, including the cross. Simeon's words also remind us that Jesus cannot simply remain someone we admire from a distance. He is a sign that will be contradicted. His presence reveals what is inside the human heart. Following him will sometimes challenge what we want, expose what needs to change, and ask us to choose him when another path looks easier.
Mary did not know everything that awaited her. She simply continued to walk with her son. We are asked to do the same. When following Christ becomes difficult or costly, do we begin to question God's presence, or can we continue walking with him even when we do not understand where the road is leading?
Lord Jesus, help us to remain faithful when following You becomes difficult. When we face disappointment, pain or uncertainty, keep us close to You. Give us the faith of Mary so that we may continue to trust You even when we cannot see what lies ahead.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
