Forget Me Not
October 8, 2026
Where do you notice division within yourself right now? Are you asking God for guidance while still holding tightly to your own answer, or asking for another sign when He has already given you reasons to trust Him?

Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. October 9th, 2026, Friday of the 27th week in Ordinary Time. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

But some of them said, He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of the demons. Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation.
A house divided against itself falls. If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. But if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. But if I, by God's finger, cast out demons, then God's kingdom has come to you. When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe. But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted and divides his plunder. He that is not with me is against me.
He who doesn't gather with me scatters.
The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest, and finding none, he says, I will turn back to my house from which I came out. When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order. Then he goes and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

The Gospel of the Lord.
When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said, By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons. Others to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? The crowd had just witnessed something remarkable. Jesus had freed a man from the power of a demon. It should have been a moment that pointed people toward God. Yet, instead of recognizing the good that had taken place, some immediately questioned where Jesus' power came from. They accused him of working through Beelzebub, while others demanded another sign. What Jesus had already done was not enough for them. Their minds were set against him, so even something good became a reason for suspicion. Jesus answered their accusation using simple logic. A kingdom fighting itself cannot survive. A household constantly divided will eventually fall apart. Satan would not defeat his own work by freeing someone from evil. Jesus was showing them that their accusation made no sense, but his words also reveal something about the way division works in our own lives. Anything divided against itself becomes weaker over time.
We can experience this division inside ourselves. We may say that we trust God, yet spend much of our time worrying about what might happen. We may ask God to guide us, then refuse to move because his direction does not match what we had planned. We may pray for forgiveness while continuing to hold tightly to resentment. We may want to follow Jesus, but still keep certain parts of our lives outside his reach. The struggle is not always visible to anyone else, but we know when our heart is being pulled in different directions.
Jesus does not ask us to pretend these struggles do not exist. He asks us to decide where we want to stand. Faith cannot grow if we continually move between trusting God and insisting that everything must happen according to our own expectations. There will always be questions we cannot answer and situations we cannot control. Following Christ means choosing Him even when we do not understand everything that is happening. The crowd also shows us another danger. They had already seen Jesus perform a good work, yet they asked for another sign. We can fall into the same habit. We tell God, if you do this, then I will know you are listening. When something happens, we soon ask for another confirmation. We can become so focused on receiving proof that we overlook what God has already done.
The prayers that were answered, the strength that carried us through a difficult season, the person who appeared when we needed help, or the unexpected opportunity that opened at the right time can easily fade from memory when the next problem arrives. There is also a lesson here about how quickly we can judge what we do not understand.
