It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you. But he said, On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

The Gospel of the Lord.
While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, Blessed is the womb that carried you, and the breasts at which you nursed. He replied, Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. The woman in the crowd meant well. She had been listening to Jesus, and was so impressed by him that she praised the mother who had given birth to him. In her eyes, Mary was blessed because she had such an extraordinary son.
Jesus did not reject what the woman said, but he redirected her attention to something that concerned everyone listening. Rather, blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it. Jesus takes the conversation from admiration to action. It is easy to admire him. We can appreciate his teachings, find comfort in his promises, and agree that his way is good. We can read scripture each morning, listen to the Gospel at Mass, or spend time reading a reflection. All of this has value. But Jesus points to what comes next. What we hear must eventually affect the way we live. That is where faith becomes more demanding. We may hear Jesus tell us to forgive, yet continue holding on to resentment. We may hear him tell us not to worry, yet allow fear to control every decision.
We may read about generosity and still protect what we have because giving feels uncomfortable. We may know that someone needs our patience, but respond harshly because we are tired. Knowing what Jesus teaches does not automatically mean we are following him. There can be a gap between hearing God's word and obeying it. Most of us know that gap well. Sometimes we even know exactly what God is asking of us, but we delay because it is inconvenient. We tell ourselves we will deal with it another day. We wait until we feel more prepared, until circumstances improve, or until following His teaching becomes easier. Yet, obedience often begins before we feel ready. Jesus reminds us that blessing is found in taking His word seriously enough to act on it. This does not require dramatic gestures. Much of Christian life happens through ordinary decisions that few people notice. Choosing not to join in gossip, apologizing when pride tells us to defend ourselves, giving someone another chance, making time to pray even when the day is crowded, refusing to compromise our values for an easier path, reaching out to someone we have neglected.
These choices can look small, but they reveal whether God's Word is becoming part of who we are.
Mary herself is a beautiful example of this. Her blessing was not simply that she carried Jesus. She listened to God and responded through her life. When God's plan interrupted everything she expected for her future, she said yes. She continued saying yes through uncertainty, hardship, and eventually, the suffering of seeing her son on the cross.
Her life shows us what it means to receive God's Word and allow it to change the direction of our lives. We will not always live this perfectly. There will be moments when we hear what God asks and choose something else. The answer is not to give up or pretend we did nothing wrong.
We can return to Him, ask for forgiveness, and begin again. Each day gives us another opportunity to move from simply knowing the Gospel to living it.
The question Jesus leaves us is very practical. What are we doing about what we have heard? Scripture is not meant only to encourage us for a few minutes before we return unchanged to our routines. God's Word invites a response. Sometimes, that response will cost us something. Sometimes, it will ask us to change a habit, forgive someone, admit a mistake, or trust God where we would rather remain in control. Hearing is the beginning. Following is where His Word becomes visible in our lives.
Is there something you know God has been asking of you but you have been delaying or avoiding? What is one small step you can take today to put His Word into practice? Lord Jesus, help us not only to hear Your Word but to live according to it. Give us the courage to follow You when obedience is difficult, and the humility to begin again when we fall short. May Your teachings shape our choices, our words, and the way we treat the people around us. Amen.
