June 29, 2026, Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles, Mass during the Day. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.

So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I have affection for you.
He said to him, feed my lambs. He said to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I have affection for you. He said to him, tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?
Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, do you have affection for me? He said to him, Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep. Most certainly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you don't want to go.
Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, Follow me.

**SPEAKER_2** (2:19)
The Gospel of the Lord.
Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Peter was not a perfect man. He was impulsive, spoke before thinking, and would later deny Jesus three times. Yet Jesus chose him to be the rock upon which the church would be built. This gospel reminds us that God does not wait for us to become flawless before calling us. He sees beyond our weaknesses and knows who we can become when we trust him. Peter's strength did not come from his own abilities. It came from his openness to God's revelation and his willingness to follow Jesus.
The Church has faced persecution, divisions, scandals and countless challenges throughout history. Yet Christ's promise remains true. The gates of the netherworld have not prevailed against it because the Church ultimately belongs to him. There are times when we feel inadequate for the responsibilities placed before us. We may doubt our abilities, question our worth, or focus on our failures. This passage invites us to remember that God often chooses ordinary people to carry out His work. What matters is not our perfection, but our faithfulness. When God calls, He also provides the grace needed for the journey. What responsibility or calling in my life feels bigger than my own abilities? And how can I place greater trust in God rather than in myself?
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing that You can work through imperfect people. Help us to trust Your plans even when we feel weak or unqualified. Strengthen our faith, guide our steps, and make us faithful in the work You have entrusted to us. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day, he arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there, he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
