June 24th, 2026, Solamnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Mass during the day.
A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Luke.

Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was full field and she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they would have called him Zacharias after the name of his father. His mother answered, Not so, but he will be called John. They said to her, There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name. They made signs to his father, what he would have him called. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, His name is John. They all marveled. His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, Blessing God. Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea. All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then will this child be? The hand of the Lord was with him.
The child was growing and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

The Gospel of the Lord. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said in reply, No, he will be called John. But they answered her, There is no one among your relatives who has this name. So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, John is his name. And all were amazed.
When the time came to name the child, the people around Zechariah and Elizabeth assumed he would follow tradition and be called after his father. It seemed like the obvious choice. It was familiar and made sense to everyone. But Elizabeth said no, he will be called John. Even Zechariah, who had been unable to speak for months, confirmed it by writing, John is his name. They were not choosing a name based on family custom. They were obeying what God had already revealed. This moment reminds us that God's plans do not always follow the expectations of those around us. Sometimes people may think they know what our life should look like, what path we should take, or who we should become.
Yet God may be calling us in a different direction. John the Baptist was given a unique mission long before he was born. His name was part of that calling. By trusting God's instruction rather than public opinion, his parents made room for God's purpose to unfold.
There are times when following God means letting go of what is familiar and choosing obedience instead. What matters is not whether everyone understands, but whether we are faithful to the one who calls us by name.
Is there an area of my life where I'm holding on to other people's expectations instead of listening to what God is asking of me?
Lord, thank You for knowing me personally and calling me according to Your purpose. Help me to trust Your guidance even when it differs from what others expect. Give me the courage to follow where You lead and the faith to believe that Your plans are always good. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day, He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there, He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
