Daily Gospel Reflections for Jul 20, 2026

July 20th, 2026, Monday of the 16th week in Ordinary Time. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Then certain of the scribes and pharisees answered, Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.
But he answered them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.

The Gospel of the Lord Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you. He said to them in reply, An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
The scribes and Pharisees wanted another sign from Jesus. They had already witnessed his teachings, his compassion and his miracles. Yet, they still demanded more proof. Their problem was not a lack of evidence. It was a lack of willingness to believe. It is easy for us to fall into the same habit. We tell God, If you answer this prayer, then I will trust you. Or, if you show me a sign, then I will know what to do. While God can guide us in many ways, faith cannot depend on constant signs. Otherwise, there will always be another reason to doubt.
Jesus pointed them to the sign of Jonah, which looked ahead to his own death and resurrection. That would become the greatest sign of all. Through the cross and the empty tomb, God has already shown his love and his power to save us. Our faith grows not because we have all the answers, but because we choose to trust the one who has already given us his greatest gift. Do we spend more time asking God for signs? Or thanking him for the ways he has already revealed his love in our lives?
Lord Jesus, help us to trust you even when we do not see every answer we hope for. Open our hearts to recognize your presence in our daily lives, and remind us that your death and resurrection are the greatest signs of your love. Strengthen our faith to follow you with confidence each day. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
