Daily Gospel Reflections for Jul 17, 2026

July 17, 2026, Friday of the 15th week in Ordinary Time. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

**SPEAKER_1** (0:21)
At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the grain fields. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.
But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him, Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath. But he said to them, Haven't you read what David did when he was hungry and those who were with him? How he entered into God's house and ate the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath day, the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?
But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. But if you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice. You wouldn't have condemned the guiltless, for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

The Gospel of the Lord Jesus was going through a field of grain on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the Sabbath. He said to them, Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? When the Pharisees saw the disciples picking grain on the Sabbath, they immediately focused on whether a rule had been broken. Jesus however looked deeper. He saw hungry men walking with him, and reminded them of David, who was given sacred bread when he and his companions were in need. This passage reveals something important about God's heart. While rules and commandments matter, they were never meant to overshadow mercy, compassion and love. The Pharisees were concerned with appearances. Jesus was concerned with people. It is easy for us to fall into the same trap. We may judge others based on what we see without knowing their struggles, burdens or circumstances. We can become so focused on being right that we forget to be kind.
Jesus invites us to see people as He sees them. Before making judgments, He calls us to understand. Before pointing out faults, He calls us to show mercy.
The heart of God's law is not cold obedience, but love that leads us closer to Him and to one another.
Do I focus more on rules and appearances, or do I take time to understand the needs and struggles of others?
Lord Jesus, teach me to see others with Your compassion. Help me not to judge too quickly, or focus only on outward actions. Give me a heart that values mercy, understanding and love. May I follow Your example in the way I treat those around me. Amen.
