A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Matthew.

**SPEAKER_3** (0:54)
Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you. Yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings, for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations. But when they deliver you up, don't be anxious how or what you will say, for it will be given you in that hour what you will say. For it is not you who speak, but the spirit of your father who speaks in you. Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. You will be hated by all men for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man has come.

The Gospel of the Lord. Jesus said to his apostles, Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves. So be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake, as a witness before them and the pagans. Jesus did not promise his apostles an easy path. He told them plainly that they would face opposition, rejection and even persecution.
Yet, he still sent them out. Their mission was not based on comfort or safety, but on faithfulness. What stands out in this passage is Jesus' instruction to be both shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. He was not asking his followers to be naïve. They needed wisdom to navigate a difficult world. At the same time, they were not to become cynical, dishonest or hard-hearted. Their actions and motives were to remain pure. The same challenge exists for us today. We live among people with different values, opinions and priorities. At times, standing for what is right can be uncomfortable. We may be misunderstood, criticized or pressured to compromise. Jesus reminds us that faith is not about winning every argument or avoiding every difficulty. It is about remaining faithful to Him while treating others with integrity and respect. We need wisdom to know how to respond and a sincere heart that reflects God's love.
When challenges come, we can remember that Christ never sends us alone. He goes before us and remains with us wherever He calls us to be.
Where in my life do I need greater wisdom? And where do I need a more sincere and trusting heart as I follow Christ? Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You even when the path is difficult. Give me wisdom in my decisions, courage in my witness, and a heart that remains sincere and faithful.
Help me to trust that You are with me in every situation, and to reflect Your love in all I do.

He descended into hell. The third day, he arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there, he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
