One came out from those borders and cried, saying, Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David. My daughter is severely possessed by a demon. But he answered her not a word.
His disciples came and begged him, saying, Send her away, for she cries after us. But he answered, I wasn't sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But she came and worshiped him, saying, Lord, help me.
But he answered, It is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. But she said, Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master's table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith. Be it done to you even as you desire. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

The Gospel of the Lord. At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, Have pity on me, Lord, son of David. My daughter is tormented by a demon. But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.
The Canaanite woman had every reason to turn away. She was an outsider. Her daughter was suffering. And when she cried out to Jesus, there was no immediate reply. Even the disciples wanted her sent away because her persistence made them uncomfortable. Yet she did not stop calling on the Lord.
There are moments when our prayers seem to meet silence. We ask for healing, direction or help, but nothing appears to change. It is easy to wonder whether God has heard us at all.
This Gospel reminds us that silence is not the same as absence. Jesus knew the woman's faith long before anyone else did. Her persistence was not driven by pride or demands. It came from love for her daughter and trust that Jesus was her only hope. She stayed because she believed his mercy was greater than her circumstances. We also face times when answers do not come quickly as we hope. Instead of walking away, we can continue to bring our needs to Christ. Every prayer offered in faith is heard, even when the answer takes longer than we expect. When our prayers are not answered right away, do we lose heart, or do we continue to trust that Jesus is listening?
Lord Jesus, teach us to trust You even when we do not see immediate answers. Give us the faith to keep coming to You with our burdens and to believe in Your goodness in every season. Strengthen our hearts to remain faithful, knowing that Your love never fails. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
