Memorial of St. John Vianney, Priest. A reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Matthew.

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders, for they don't wash their hands when they eat bread? He summoned the multitude and said to them, Hear and understand, that which enters into the mouth doesn't defile the man, but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man. Then the disciples came and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?

But he answered, Every plant which my heavenly father didn't plant will be uprooted. Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.

The Gospel of the Lord. He summoned the crowd and said to them, Hear and understand. It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person, but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one. Then his disciples approached and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?

Jesus shifts the focus from outward appearances to the condition of the heart. People often spend much effort trying to look respectable, follow the right customs, or avoid doing the wrong things in front of others. Yet, Jesus reminds us that our words reveal what is happening within us. A harsh reply, gossip, pride, or dishonesty, does not begin with the mouth. They begin in the heart before they are spoken. In the same way, words of kindness, forgiveness, encouragement and truth also flow from a heart that is being shaped by God. The Pharisees were offended because Jesus challenged the way they understood holiness. His words invited people to look beyond external actions and examine themselves honestly. That invitation remains for us today. Before we speak, it is worth asking whether our words will bring life or leave wounds.

A few thoughtful words can encourage someone who is struggling, while careless words can stay with a person for years.

Are my words reflecting a heart that is becoming more like Christ, especially when I am frustrated, disappointed or under pressure? Lord Jesus, help us to guard our hearts, because our words flow from what is within us. Teach us to speak with truth, kindness and love. When we fail, forgive us and continue to shape our hearts so that our words may reflect your goodness each day. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
