Daily Gospel Reflections for Aug 3, 2026

Let's go to the next part of the 18th week in Ordinary Time, a reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Immediately, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray.
When evening had come, he was there alone, but the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It's a ghost! And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Cheer up! It is I. Don't be afraid. Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters. He said, Come. Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
Immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased. Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, You are truly the son of God. When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region, and brought to him all who were sick. And they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

The Gospel of the Lord. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and preceded him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. The disciples were exactly where Jesus had told them to be. Yet, they still found themselves struggling against strong winds and rough waters.
Following his instructions did not mean the journey would be easy. It meant they could trust that he knew where they were, even when they could not see him. Before coming to them, Jesus spent time in prayer. Then, in the darkest part of the night, he walked toward them across the sea.
He did not arrive too early or too late. He came at the right moment. We also experience seasons when life feels like rowing against the wind. We pray, keep going, and wonder why the answers seem delayed. It is easy to think that we have been left on our own. This Gospel reminds us that Jesus never abandoned his disciples. While they struggled, he was already on his way to them. His presence changed everything even before the storm had ended. When we cannot see what God is doing, we can still trust that He sees us. His timing is never separated from His love. Is there an area of your life where you feel like you have been struggling on your own?

Lord Jesus, when life feels difficult, and I cannot see the way ahead, help me remember that You never lose sight of me. Give me the faith to keep trusting You, even when I do not yet see Your answer. Thank You for coming to me with Your love and Your presence. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
