Could Turmeric Help in Digestion?
Thanks for asking. Turmeric is a plant that belongs to the ginger family. It has a bright yellow-orange color and a bitter and peppery taste. The main active ingredient in turmeric is carcumin, a compound that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
One of the conditions that turmeric may help with is indigestion, which can be caused by various factors such as stress, overeating, alcohol, medications or underlying diseases. However, one of the main causes is excess stomach acid, which can irritate the lining of the stomach and the esophagus, causing symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating, nausea and heartburn. To relieve indigestion, doctors often prescribe drugs called proton pump inhibitors, PPIs, such as omoprazole. These drugs work by blocking the production of acid in the stomach. However, they can also have some side effects, such as headaches, diarrhoea or increased risk of infections. But what if there was a natural alternative to PPIs? This is where tumeric comes in. According to a study published in 2022 PMJ evidence-based medicine, tumeric may be as effective as omoprazole at reducing stomach acid and treating indigestion. The study involved 206 participants who had reoccurring indigestion. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups. One group took carcumin capsules four times a day.
Another group took omoprazole capsules once a day. And the third group took both carcumin and omoprazole. The results showed that after 28 days, all three groups had significant improvements in their indigestion symptoms. There was no difference between the groups in terms of effectiveness or safety. This means that carcumin was as good as omoprazole at resolving indigestion, and that combining them did not offer any additional benefits. The researchers concluded that carcumin could be a safe and effective alternative to omoprazole for people with indigestion.
However, they also acknowledged some limitations of their study, such as the small sample size and the short duration. They called for more research to confirm their findings and to explore the optimal dose and duration of carcumin treatment. So, should you start taking turmeric? Well, before you start taking turmeric supplements or adding more turmeric to your diet, you should consult your doctor first. Turmeric may interact with some medications or cause allergic reactions in some people. Also, keep in mind that not all turmeric products are created equal. Some may contain additives or contaminants that could affect their quality and safety. There you have it.
Now you know if turmeric can help with indigestion. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you really will know for sure.
