Consumers are upgrading their TVs and states are trying to upgrade their rural health care.
From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. Even with persistent inflation, people are somehow finding room in their budgets for new electronics. Best Buy announced this week it's raising its outlook. This comes after a strong second quarter where the company's same store sales increased 4.1 percent. Marketplace's Stephanie Hughes looks at what's going on.

The market for televisions has not been what you'd call booming recently. Partly because TVs haven't changed much recently. But now there's a new kind called an RGB television.
Wed Bush's Matthew McCartney says it's meant to create a really vivid picture.

When you're watching that movie with that dark scene, those blacks actually look really black and then those colors can really pop.

**Stephanie Hughes** (1:23)
Shoppers have been going to Best Buy to check out those colors. And while they may not be buying the biggest and fanciest new TVs, which can cost thousands, they're still upgrading.

It's the piece of equipment that's bringing people into the door. We call that the halo effect. We saw this TV. It's out of our budget. But there is something else that actually is a little bit better than what we had before.

**Stephanie Hughes** (1:44)
Domestic TV sales at Best Buy went up more than 10% in the second quarter from last year.
Computer sales also grew. That's mostly due to the average selling price being up significantly, driven by high memory costs. But also BDO's Natalie Cutler says people who bought computers during the pandemic are now itching for new ones.

**Amy Scott** (2:03)
All of those systems are now becoming more outdated.

Also, Cutler points out some people want new computers that can better support AI applications. She says as artificial intelligence develops, it could potentially spur a whole new round of computer purchases a year or so from now.

For those of us who keep an eye on interest rates and monetary policy, it's typically been a moment for a Fed chair to share how the central bank is thinking about inflation and the road ahead. But will Warsh follow that trend? For more, let's bring in Diane Swank. She's Chief Economist at KPMG.

This is Kevin Warsh's inaugural address, and Fed Chairman usually use it as a way to frame how they're going to be thinking about their chairmanship and their imprint. But this task for Chairman Warsh is he doesn't have the grace period that other chairman have. We're in the middle of an inflation surge that's gone on for over five years. He's got to prove his independence from the president and the administration in making decisions about interest rates. And he needs to give markets some kind of clue of how he's thinking about inflation. And that's where he's been very reluctant to do that. He doesn't want to give too much of his hand. But if he doesn't, it leaves his colleagues and financial markets filling in the blanks for him. And that means they could get ahead of him.
