You cannot be the successful neighborhood drug dealer and a model of Jesus Christ in the same testimony.
One of those men needs a savior. The other one thinks he is what people should buy. He is trying to be both. That is not deep. That is ridiculous. He has been selling that feeling since he could rhyme. You remember Deion's rap song, those of us of my generation, must be the money.
After Deion signed in the NFL in 1989, strangers wanted to be friends, he said in the rap song. He called his mama. The answer was not the Lord. The chorus was the creed.
Then the only almost honest turn in the song. People say, don't let money change you. Deion answered by listing what had already changed. That is not a party song. That is Deion's personal national anthem. Friends explained by money, women explained by money, identity explained by money, self-confidence is that stack in the church clothes. It is not trust in the Lord. It is insecurity dressed as holiness. Counterfeit faith has to flash. If the Lord is the source, you do not need the drape. If the drape is the source, you cannot take it off without disappearing. All real confidence is borrowed. It comes through trust in God. Everything else is fake. And fake always has to show you the shine. That is why the jewelry never comes off. That is why the glasses stay on. That is why the camera is a sacrament. Take the metal off this man and the persona has no body.
Player Prime earned a strut, Super Bowls, two sports. Tape you could put on a projector and never blink. That swagger had receipts. Coach Prime wants the same worship with a 16 and 21 record in Boulder, a three and nine last year and a fifth tier label that says up and down like it is the weather. The persona did not evolve. It detached from the scoreboard and kept the liturgy. The 20 something who explained his religion in must be the money is the late 50 something selling aura as the wind. Same dealer, same corner, a whistle around his neck. This summer, the papers wrote the confession for him. After bladder cancer at Big 12 Media Days, the comeback was not a scheme. It was not a standard. They said he believes he got his aura back.
