Shannon Sharpe (0:00)

Thank you for coming back. Part two is underway.

Give me the best advice Mike Tyson has given you.

Ryan Garcia (0:07)

Ooh, Mike Tyson, he's given me a lot, man.

Some stuff I can't say. I would say just the fact that, you know, don't just hold yourself too highly, man. Just ego is not your friend. Just make sure you stay grounded. You entertain people, but always stay grounded and humble, you know. He talks about that a lot and, you know, I think Mike is a very intelligent person. He's been through a lot. I think he's found what builds you. And I think that he took all that and doesn't let it define him and he's, he's sharp. He's actually sharp.

Shannon Sharpe (0:44)

You hear about boxes go and broke. What's the one thing that you learned about money?

Ryan Garcia (0:51)

I learned that your lifestyle and the way you spend money will make a rich man broke, you know. So you got to be, you know, you got to run things like a business, you know. You have, it don't matter if you have 100 million, 50 million, 30 million, everything needs to be running like a business.

Things need to be all calculated, and you have to have a really great team around you to manage it. And trust them, because they will fuck you over if they have the chance, you know. Not saying everybody, but you got to, you know, pay attention to your money, the ins and outs of it. And yeah, like have a great financial team, and just do things the right way. I mean, that's it. I mean, there's really no secret sauce to it. As long as you do things the right way, pay your taxes, and manage your money the way it needs to be done. You should live a healthy life if you're making 20, 30 million. Right, correct. If you're not, then that means you're doing something wrong.

Shannon Sharpe (1:49)

Right. What do you think your worst investment is? What's the worst thing you like? You bought it, and you're like, man, I shouldn't have bought this.

Ryan Garcia (1:55)

It has to be cars.

Shannon Sharpe (1:57)

You like cars? You a car guy?

Ryan Garcia (1:58)

Well, I mean, I just, I spent so much money in the beginning of my career just on cars. And then I would just keep on getting new ones, and then taking them back, and the new ones, and this was just like a bad, bad, bad thing. But that, I spent a lot of money on clothes at times, still do, I would say I have to still work on that one. Right. Yeah, but I stopped gambling pretty much, and...

Shannon Sharpe (2:22)

But you bet, did you bet, you really bet two million on the fight with Devin Haney?

Ryan Garcia (2:25)

No, I didn't. But I did bet money, but I did not bet that much, but...

Shannon Sharpe (2:29)

But you won.

Ryan Garcia (2:30)

But I won, so...

Shannon Sharpe (2:32)

So you can bet on yourself in boxing, and you can bet on yourself in winning.

Ryan Garcia (2:34)

Yeah.

Shannon Sharpe (2:35)

Yeah.

Ryan Garcia (2:35)

My dad's gonna bet on me beating the shit out of Conor Benn. He said, you know, why not? You know what he's about to do.

Shannon Sharpe (2:44)

He's about to come up, huh? He's about to hit a lick.

Ryan Garcia (2:46)

Said, Dad, ooh, let's go. Even more incentive to kick his ass.

Shannon Sharpe (2:51)

The training.

Ryan Garcia (2:52)

Yeah.

Shannon Sharpe (2:53)

You talked about, like, the partying lifestyle, the drinking, the doing the drugs. Is that a thing of the past for Ryan Garcia?

Ryan Garcia (3:00)

I say everything has its time and place. I never did drugs, though. That was crazy.

But I did drink a lot, and I was smoking weed a little bit back in the day.

Shannon Sharpe (3:11)

So you don't consider drinking weed drugs?

Ryan Garcia (3:13)

Nah. Nah.

Drinking is fun. You know, drinking at the right time is really fun.

Shannon Sharpe (3:18)

Right.

Ryan Garcia (3:18)

Getting drunk ain't.

Shannon Sharpe (3:19)

Right.

Ryan Garcia (3:20)

But drinking is a little fun.

Everything in moderation and at the right timing. I think that when you overdo anything is bad for you. If you eat too much Oreos, you're going to end up sick. So at the end of the day, it's all about moderation and being more wise in your decisions, you know. You don't need a drink every weekend. You don't need a drink every time somebody is having an event, you know. You gotta pick and choose when is the right time to do it. And I think as I mature and get more wiser, I think I'm getting even better at it.
