You want Bud to come out of retirement in a year to fight you?
Ryan Garcia (0:03)
100%. The words are getting in some little by little. Getting under his skin. He visited Conor Benn's camp. I already know, bro, you're a hater trying to give him tips. You're not in the ring for him, and I'll beat your ass too.
Shannon Sharpe (0:14)
Lord have mercy.
Ryan Garcia (0:15)
The Goofy Avengers, Claressa Shakur.
Shannon Sharpe (0:17)
Oh, Lord, what you got to be with Claressa for?
Ryan Garcia (0:20)
They're the Goofy Avengers.
Shannon Sharpe (0:46)
Hello. Welcome to another episode of Club Shay Shay. I am your host, Shannon Sharp. I'm also the proprietor of Club Shay Shay. Stopping by for a conversation and a drink today is one of Boxer's most popular and biggest stars, one of the fastest hands in the game, one of the most marketable boxers in the sport, a media sensation, an international superstar, a prodigy, a model, a trailblazer, a showman, a philanthropist, a 15-time national gold medal champion, the current WBC welterweight world champion, King Ryde, the Flash himself, Ryan Garcia.
Ryan Garcia (1:14)
Oh, damn, good introduction.
Shannon Sharpe (1:16)
Yeah, that was pretty good.
Ryan Garcia (1:17)
That was pretty good.
Shannon Sharpe (1:17)
Normally, we come in, we toast, but we know you're in training, we're going to toast water today.
Ryan Garcia (1:21)
Well, isn't that bad luck? I'm not going to toast water, but I will. Cheers up.
Shannon Sharpe (1:27)
I didn't know it was bad luck to toast water.
Ryan Garcia (1:29)
I don't believe in bad luck. You know, somebody once told me that, so it's like.
Shannon Sharpe (1:34)
All right, you got this fight coming up in a few days, and your opponent, Conor Benn, he's been saying some pretty nasty things, saying you're not a real Mexican. When someone says that about you, do you take offense to it? Are you like, okay, I'm going to show you I'm a real man when I get in this ring?
Ryan Garcia (1:49)
I've been hearing that since I was younger. It doesn't really have any real effect on me. I just think it's just funny. I mean, how many times are they going to say the same thing over the years? I mean, you got to come up with something different. I just think it's a little boring and repetitive, but if he wants to go that route, we're going to have to beat the shit out of him. That's an independent thing. Like, what could we do?
Shannon Sharpe (2:13)
But what does it mean? I mean, you're not a real Mexican. Because you don't speak Spanish.
Ryan Garcia (2:19)
I speak Spanish, yeah. So I guess you have to speak Spanish in order to be a real Mexican. Now, I really don't know what they're going for. I mean, it's in my blood, it's my heritage, but I don't really, like I said, I don't really take offense to it. I just, you know, I'm going to get in there and handle my job.
Shannon Sharpe (2:37)
Because Oscar went through something very, very similar. When he fought Julio Cesar Chavez, and he ended up beating him twice. But Oscar, I mean, Oscar just shrugged off like, hey.
Ryan Garcia (2:47)
But the funny thing is like, Conor Benn's not even Mexican. So like, what's he getting involved for?
Shannon Sharpe (2:51)
He's born in England.
Ryan Garcia (2:52)
Yeah, like shut your ass up. Just out here, amateur boxing in Australia. You better like, move on with that, buddy.
Shannon Sharpe (3:02)
Do you wish you had learned Spanish when you were younger?
Ryan Garcia (3:06)
I mean, I wouldn't have minded if my dad and my mom would have probably made that a little bit.
Shannon Sharpe (3:10)
If they'd have spoke Spanish. Did they speak Spanish around? You're probably not.
Ryan Garcia (3:14)
My dad does speak Spanish, though. My mom speaks Spanish. They just didn't make an emphasis in teaching me. But I think it was just because it was a little different in those times. I think it was more looked down upon, sort of like, embraced. For me, would I have been happy to learn some Spanish, for sure?
Shannon Sharpe (3:30)
You know, you're not too old. You can learn it right now if you want to.
Ryan Garcia (3:32)
Yeah, no, for sure. I mean, all right, man. You're out here like the chick.com is, bro. We cool off that, bro. I'm here to whoop ass and collect checks. Like, what are we doing here?
Shannon Sharpe (3:45)
You know what, has Oscar given you any advice on how to approach this and be in the moment? Stay focused, stay present?
