Can you get rid of cellulite?
Thanks for asking.
Cellulite is a regular source of insecurity among women. That's been especially true since Glossy Magazines came along, pretty much labeling it Public Enemy Number One. In our collective mind, it's become inextricably linked to being overweight, or having gone through pregnancy. In reality though, cellulite is the result of a number of factors, and hormonal changes in particular. The first thing to know is that there are actually three types of cellulite, aqueous cellulite, which is flexible and slightly visible, adipose cellulite, which is soft and limited to a certain part of the body, and fibrous cellulite, which is hard and painful to the touch, sometimes coming with a purplish blue colour. What do those three types have in common? The appearance of cellulite is always a deformation of fatty tissue situated just underneath the skin. It's most often found under the buttocks, hips, thighs, stomach and upper arms. When the number or size of adipose cells increases, the compartments in which those cells are stored starts to swell. That's why the surface of the skin gets bumpy. Hormones are the main culprit, in particular oestrogen, which increases the size of fatty cells and leads to water retention. Puberty, pregnancy, certain moments in the menstrual cycle, and the menopause are all periods which are conducive to cellulite formation. But genetic factors, stress, blood circulation issues, and water retention can also be to blame.
Can cellulite have negative health consequences?
Fear not, it's not dangerous at all. In fact, it's naturally present in the bodies of 90% of all women. Men also have some, but in far lower quantities. In men, cellulite is mostly found in the abdomen and arms. It's also less visible as men have smaller fatty cells and thicker skin. Both in men and women, lifestyle factors have a part to play. An unbalanced diet and sedentary lifestyle can exacerbate cellulite problems, in particular when it comes to adipose cellulite. So what techniques are out there for getting rid of cellulite? There's no shortage of options out there, often being marketed as miracle cures. You've got suction pads, massage, lymphatic drainage, kneading and rolling, for example. If you correctly identify the type of cellulite you have, you should be able to find the best method for dealing with it. For example, if you have aqueous cellulite, experts suggest using anti-water retention methods like lymphatic drainage and massage. Meanwhile, a somewhat onerous process called cryolipolysis can be used on adipose cellulite. It consists of freezing and then destroying the fat.
The technique can have short-term side effects like bruising, or longer-term consequences such as burning. Liposuction is another method which aims to extract fatty clusters through surgery. As with any form of surgery, there's always a risk of complications, like embolisms or phlebitis. It's also expensive and only guarantees results in the short term.
