Can Men Get Breast Cancer?
Thanks for asking. Figures from Cancer Research UK show that there are an average of nearly 57,000 new breast cancer cases detected each year in the country. It's the most common form of cancer, accounting for 15% of all cases. While the vast majority of breast cancer cases are in women, there are actually around 370 diagnoses in men each year too. That's right, men also have breast tissue around the nipples, so are also potentially susceptible. As we near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's take a moment to discuss the phenomenon and raise awareness, to make sure any symptoms in men don't go overlooked. Experts say it's most commonly found in men over the age of 60, because it's so rare, it often goes undiagnosed until it's more advanced. What are the symptoms men should look out for then? As with women, men should be aware of any apparent changes to their breast area. Cancer Research UK lists symptoms to watch out for on its website, including lumps in the breast, even if they're painless, oozing from the nipple, nipple retraction, swelling of the breast, a sore or ulcer in the skin, a lump or swelling under the arm, and a rash on or around the nipple. If you notice any of those symptoms, it's best you see your GP as soon as possible. They'll examine you and recommend further steps based on the symptoms. You might be referred to a specialist and undergo tests such as a mammogram or ultrasound.
What factors increase the risk? Genetics play a significant role. The risk is much higher if a close family member, male or female, has had breast cancer, and it increases with the number of affected relatives. Kleiner-Felter syndrome is a rare genetic condition which sees a man born with an extra female chromosome. It results in higher estrogen levels and lower testosterone, also raising the risk of breast cancer. Additionally, previous radiation exposure to the chest or having liver cirrhosis are linked to higher chances of developing the disease. Other potential risk factors are often associated with an imbalance in hormone levels where estrogen is elevated and testosterone is reduced. These include conditions like excessive breast tissue growth, known as gynecomastia, obesity, smoking, alcohol use and some testicular disorders. Even if you don't have any risk factors though, that doesn't mean you're totally immune. How is breast cancer in men treated? It's pretty similar to that for postmenopausal women whose bodies no longer produce estrogen. It generally involves surgery and depending on the case, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy may also be recommended.
There you have it.
Now you know whether men can get breast cancer. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you will really know for sure.
