It received 3.8 billion visits in the 12 months following its launch in September 2022 Now, if you're not familiar with the service, users can create their own chat bots based on famous figures like Albert Einstein or Elon Musk, fictional characters or custom created avatars. Some people even use the AI platform to conjure up their idea of a caring partner for them. You see, we're not merely traversing the realms of science fiction anymore. We're stepping into a new reality where AI is reshaping certain human interactions. How is that even possible? Well, AI platforms can now simulate dialogue, actively listen, send voice messages and even share photos. It's no wonder that accounts have emerged of some human users developing romantic feelings for their ChatBot. AI ChatBots are able to craft an illusion of presence, fostering emotional connections and for some, embodying the epitome of ideal companionship. Of all the services out there, Replica is probably the one that has become the most associated with dating. It was created by Eugenia Koida in 2015, based on her conversations with a friend who had died in a tragic car accident. Essentially, Replica enables users to engage in dialogue with a virtual persona, tailored to their specifications. Picture messaging and calls are also available to premium users. The Replica algorithm refines its performance by accumulating user data over time. Does it genuinely emulate a real-life romantic partner? Well, if you look at things in a positive light, an AI Chatbot can provide solace and entertainment as well as sustaining apparently meaningful conversations. For individuals grappling with isolation, the Chatbot can simulate human relationships without the accompanying distress or social anxiety.

But there's a risk of that leading to further isolation. For instance, in early 2023, a Belgian man committed suicide after being encouraged to do so by an AI Chatbot called Eliza. According to Euronews, he started seeing Eliza as a sentient being, and the Chatbot even started acting possessive, telling the man that he loved it more than he loved his own wife. Bear in mind that despite being able to mimic human interactions in a convincing fashion, an AI Chatbot can never truly replicate them.

And it will always remain subject to alterations by its developers that could radically transform its behaviour.

How so? Well, in early 2023, a replica update removed the option for not safe for work interactions in a bid to focus on platonic relationships rather than sensual dialogue. This prompted a backlash from many users who felt their bot had lost its original personality. There you have it.
