Can AI Find the Next Breakthrough Drug in Nature?

What if the next major medical breakthrough isn’t invented from scratch in a laboratory—but discovered in a plant, microbe, or molecule that has existed in nature for millions of years? In this episode of TechDaily.

David (0:01)

What if the cure for the next massive global health crisis isn't actually being painstakingly invented in some billion-dollar sterile laboratory?

Sophia (0:10)

Right, what if it's just sitting under a damp log somewhere in the Amazon rainforest?

David (0:14)

Exactly, welcome to techdaily.ai. I'm your host David, and I'm absolutely thrilled to introduce our guest expert for today, Sophia.

Sophia (0:22)

It's so great to be here.

Sophia (0:38)

Such a good opportunity.

David (0:40)

It really is. All right, let's get into it. We spend so much time talking about artificial intelligence as this purely digital phenomenon.

Sophia (0:47)

Yeah, it's always chat bots writing emails or algorithms generating images.

David (0:50)

Code writing code, exactly. But if you have ever wondered when this technology is going to step off the screen and actually start altering human biology, specifically curing human ailments well, this is the exact frontier you need to pay attention to.

Sophia (1:04)

It is the frontier because we are looking at a biotech startup called Inveda, and they just secured a massive $311 million Series E funding round.

David (1:14)

Which is huge.

Sophia (1:15)

Oh, it's massive. And their entire mission is to bypass the traditional pharmaceutical lab entirely. They want to find medicines hiding in plain sight inside plants and microbes.

David (1:26)

It's literally the intersection of the most advanced computational technology we have ever built. Just colliding with the most ancient, fundamentally natural biology on Earth.

Sophia (1:35)

And that $311 million figure, I mean, that is really just the tip of the spear when you look at the sheer momentum behind this approach right now.

David (1:44)

Let's actually hold on that number for a second because I want to look at the financial reality of this. They pull in $311 million in a Series E round. The lead investor is Catalio Capital Management, with heavy participation from Iconic and some other really major big names. Huge names. And this catapults their valuation to $2 billion.

Sophia (2:03)

$2 billion.

David (2:04)

But here is the detail that gave me pause. That valuation has doubled in just the last 12 months.

Sophia (2:11)

Yeah, which is unheard of.

David (2:12)

Exactly. A year ago, they were valued at $1 billion, and now they're at $2 billion. And I mean, we have seen this movie before in tech.

Sophia (2:20)

Oh, definitely.

David (2:21)

We saw it with Web 3, we saw it with the Metaverse, and we are absolutely seeing it with Generative AI. It feels like any startup that slaps the letters A and I onto their pitch deck is suddenly drowning in venture capital.

Sophia (2:33)

Yeah, it's the hype cycle.

David (2:34)

Right. So I have to push back here.

Is this massive influx of capital just a symptom of a hype bubble, or is there undeniable concrete physical progress happening here?

Sophia (2:46)

I get the skepticism, I really do. It is incredibly tempting to lump this in with the general software AI bubble.

But venture capital in the biotech space, it operates under a completely different set of physical laws than traditional tech.

David (2:59)

How so?

Sophia (2:59)

Well, in traditional tech, you can scale a software product to say, five million users over a weekend, right? Just with some clever marketing and a bit of extra server space.

David (3:08)

Sure, you just spin up more AWS instances.

Sophia (3:11)

Exactly. And if it fails, the cost of failure is relatively low, you just shut down the servers.

David (3:16)

Right. Nobody gets hurt.

Sophia (3:17)

But biotech doesn't work like that at all. You are dealing with actual human physiology, you are dealing with clinical trials, massive regulatory hurdles, you cannot fake a biological reaction.

David (3:28)

The body either heals or it doesn't.

Sophia (3:30)

Precisely. You can't market your way out of a drug being toxic. And that is why the phrase series E is the operative term here.

David (3:38)

Unpack that a bit for us.

Sophia (3:39)

So in the startup world, early funding rounds, your seed, series A, series B, those are very often bets on the team or the vision, or maybe just the algorithm itself.

David (3:50)

They're buying into the dream.

Sophia (3:52)

Right, the potential. But by the time a biotech company reaches a series E, the foundational science cannot just be theoretical anymore. It has to be real.

David (4:01)

Because it gets too expensive.

Sophia (4:02)

Exactly. Investors at the stage are funding the wildly expensive later stages of development. We are talking specifically about human clinical trials, Catalio and Iconic. They aren't writing these massive checks just because the algorithm has a nice user interface.
